Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Win2K SP4).
Do you have any other email accounts running in OE besides the Hotmail
account?
Does OE's Folders pane include the Hotmail-specific folders named Inbox,
Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Bulk Mail?

1. Create a new identity via OE Files | Identities | Add new identity. Name
it anything you want /except/ "Main Identity" and do not include the word
"main" in the name.
2. Assuming you do NOT want or need any of the messages in the old identity,
delete it via File | Identities | Manage Identities | select (highlight) the
identity you want to delete & press the REMOVE button.

Well, your friend shouldn't have been using your OE identity to begin with.
You can uninstall Thunderbird via Add/Remove Programs if it's still
installed.

If you can't even open OE to create a new identity, let me know.

The new identity should take care of that.
If you need help in setting up your Hotmail account in your new identity,
just ask in a reply to this thread.
Adhere to all of the following caveats to avoid such problems in the future,
Joe:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items folders to archive messages. Move your
archives to local folders that you've created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.
- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

1. Have you ever been able to access (a) *this* account (not any other ones)
in OE (b) since you switched from Comcast to Qwest? If yes, when was the
last time you accessed this account in OE with Qwest as your ISP?
2. Is it a na...@hotmail.com account or a na...@msn.com account?
3. Is this account associated with Qwest's Partner Agreement with MSN and
can you access this account in MSN Mail?
IN RE the Comcast account:
1. OE Tools | Accounts | Mail: Select (highlight) the Comcast account and
press the REMOVE button.
(Why this account is present in the new identity is anyone's guess unless
you still have some Comcast software installed.)

Not entirely correct. If you ever used OE with a free Hotmail account in the
past, and not allowed that account to lapse, it will still work. I just
tried it on the one account I have which does still work.

Qwest + MSN? That is an odd duck, and I really have no clue how it works, or
how to fix it when it breaks. Apparently Qwest support just hands you off to
Windows Live support, and Windows Live support just hands you off to Qwest
support.
Q. "since you switched from Comcast to Qwest"?
A. No. This is when it all started. I have deleted all references to Comcast
I could find. Even searched registry for any other reference to Comcast.
Q. "Is it a na...@hotmail.com account or a na...@msn.com account"?
A. I have a email address at na...@hotmail.com (one I've had for at least 7
years. It was my surfing junk mail account when I had other providers) which
is now my only active email account now. I had a email account name with
Comcast through OE. I would just open OE and it would sign on to Comcast and
get my mail. Which is what it is still trying to do now with Hotmail.
Q. "Is this account associated with Qwest's Partner Agreement with MSN and
can you access this account in MSN Mail"?
A. Not sure I know what you mean. When I got Qwest, MSN said welcome to MSN.
Don't really remember. Been to long. I use Hotmail because OE became unusable.
IN RE the Comcast account:
Q. "OE Tools | Accounts | Mail: Select (highlight) the Comcast account and
press the REMOVE button."
A. Comcast is not listed as asked above. Hotmail is shown as default.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open OE Tools | Accounts | Mail: Select (highlight) the current Hotmail
account and press the REMOVE button.
2. Close OE & reboot for good measure.
3. Open a browser window to this page:
http://windowslivehelp.com/solutions/settings/archive/2009/02/18/how-to-add-your-e-mail-account-to-microsoft-outlook-express.aspx
4a. Open OE Tools | Accounts | click on ADD | MAIL and follow the wizard's
prompts, entering the correct settings per #3 above.
4b. Now open OE Tools | Accounts | [Hotmail] | Properties | Advanced |
Delivery:
=> If you do NOT check (enable) the "Leave messages on the server" option,
your Hotmail messages will NOT be available at www.hotmail.com nor will they
be available to OE running on another computer.
=> Enabled/disable the other two (2) options as desired.
5. From time to time, you will want to access the account at www.hotmail.com
and review the contents of the folders there (e.g., review the Junk Mail
folder in case a message you wanted was filtered there instead; if you Move
a message to the Inbox, OE will download the message the next time it polls
the server for new messages).
2. Disable inbound & outbound email scanning by your anti-virus application.
It provides no additional protection, it could be causing the problem, and
even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
