I'm running a SBS2003 server with IE 6.0.3790 and I think I used to have both
pop-up blocker and manage add-ons. But lately my server has started to act
strangely and explorer.exe and shell32.dll is making problems... Along with
this I think these 2 mentioned tool options went missing from my Internet
Explorer.. So now when sitting on the console using Internet I get all these
comercial pop-ups al the time..
Anyone have any ideas?
I have used MS spyware and other tools to check for browserspyware and used
3 different antivirus apps but to no use..

Thanks

To clarify..
Under Tools menu I don't have
Pop-up Blocker nor
Manage Add-ons...

I have been looking thru all the posts here and been checking registry values
and policy setting but I cannot seem to find anything that relates to my
problem or the values are not set.

No policies are set to restrict these tools so where did they go?

Would appreciate some help.
Thanks

With such a vague symptom description you could be looking
at windows messenger "popups". Try disabling Windows Messenger?

I aint running messenger on the server.

And a vague description.. What can I write more than these two options under
"tools" have disappeared. I don't know where they went...

Thanks

Well I have checked that document already but these keys doesn't exist in my
config.. I have HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft but no
policies for IE..

Should I add them and see?

I have been looking thru all policies I can come to think of from the
policyeditor but can't see that there even is an option to delete these menus.

Thanks

No need to add that key/value. I don't have that build / OS in any of my
systems, so unable to test it. May be someone here or in the Server groups
should be able to assist better.

Sorry, I overlooked that part. However, I wasn't even aware that that OS
had those features. I thought they were new with XPsp2 and only available
on it.

OIC. "SBS2003 server with IE 6.0.3790" == WS2003sp1?

Well, I have been looking thru 20 different articles about IE hardening and I
managed to find out that I was running the server with hardening, but I
disabled it and IE still looks the same.. ( I changed a registry setting from
1 to 0)

However, when I was fooling around with some setting under Security settings
in "internet options", more options under the Tool menu disappeared. I have
an app called "RoboForm" installed and that app used to have some options
under the Tools menu but they all disappeared now as well when I changed
something.. Don't know what I did to make them disappear and no matter how I
change the settings I can seem to get them back..

As far I can see there are no GP settings that turns these features off
either... So I'm totally lost here... I read a whitepaper about IE's enhanced
security config but I don't get any more enligthened by it...

I don't know what that would be but I can imagine that a single switch
might only signify something is to be used in future rather than alter
current settings.

Does your OS have an IE Repair? (Ref. KB194177)
or perhaps at least have module setupwbv.dll present?

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Doing that might shake up the bits while recognizing the new option bit.

BTW notice that a boot is required to effect the repair phase;
so you may have to schedule that test.

Does your OS iexplore.exe support XPsp2's /rereg command-line option?

Using it might be a more acceptable first try because it doesn't
try to force a boot, though I'm not sure if it tries to put anything
into the registry as Pending...

BTW if you want to try the latter there may be some typos in the
[IEReRegSection] (or whatever the equivalent is on your system):
E.g. I found the following errors on mine (mostly to do with whether
there is a DllRegisterServer entry point or just a DllInstall entry point
in each of the following modules:

%11%\comctl32.dll,NI
%11%\digest.dll,NI
%11%\inetcpl.cpl,NI (I deleted the first and left this.)
;%11%\msapsspc.dll (I actually deleted this line.)

Making those four changes allowed the whole section to execute cleanly.

OK, so.. I even tried to uninstall hardening via add/remove programs but
still no change. I reinstalled a 3rd party program that used to be under the
Tools menu and at least I got that option back..

I tried checking in add/remove for IE but there is no such option. Also if I
check the Internet Explorer folder on my computer there is no SETUP.EXE
file...

I tried running rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance but it says that
setupwbv.dll is missing...

If I try to run the rereg command with IE it only opensup a IE window with
http:///rereg in the address bar...

Well... I'm not sure what to do more... and think I'll just install a 3rd
party pop-up blocker instead..

Thanks

Evidently not, then.

We're not done yet. Take that fixed section of ieuinit.inf
(whatever it's called) and point advpack.dll at it.
E.g. if the section is called IE.Repair.ReRegister Run...

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\System32\ieuinit.inf,IE.Repair.ReRegister

Since this stuff used to be done during the boot while nothing else
was running my preference is to try to reduce other activity as much
as possible before doing it. Also, I don't know if any of it tries to
schedule other bits of themselves to be done only during the next
boot but I think it doesn't hurt to do one after it's done just in case.

Good luck

Well tonight I have tried running some of the sections from the *.inf file
but nothing that helped.. And I can't actually find a section that is called
"register" or "reregister" or anything similar..
I tried some of the other settings but no solution and now I don't even have
any IE explorer icons left on my desktop, or under menus... I have to start
fileexplorer to start using Internet ;-)

I'm starting to disbelieve myself about this.. maybe I never had the pop-up
menu.. but then why didn't I get all these commercials before.. Nah kidding,
but kind of curious where they menus have gone.. =)

Thanks for your efforts!!

But were there lines such as the ones I found on XPsp2 which I mentioned
I needed to modify? What is the name of the section that they are in?
That's what you would point the LaunchINFSection routine at.

If you like you could attach your ieuinit.inf here for inspection
or E-mail it to me and then we would know for sure if your .inf file
has that sort of support built into it. I was just guessing that that might be
the case by assuming that if you had the XPsp2 Manage Add-ons and
Pop-up Blocker features that you would probably have its /rereg feature
(or what's left of it, since it has become undocumented) too.

Progressive hardening? <eg>

(Don't forget I found that TechNet article to confirm your claim
about the possibility of having those features in an OS such as yours now.)

Another possibility would be that you have removed the service pack...

Hello.
Below is the requested file...

I haven't added anything or deleted anything from the server as far as I
remember... ( But that is what they always say.. ;-) )
Anyway, I defintely haven't removed any service packs. Only thing I can come
to think of is if something happened during an update from MS Update...

And as this IE version is newer than the one I have on my WinXP, why would
they have taken out these features? Also strange to see that there seem to be
no information around on how to reinstall IE6 on operating systems other than
WinXP.

Cheers,
Rob

Toto, we're not in Kansas any more... <w>

Based on this my *guess* would be that you have new entry points
in your inetcpl.cpl module such as HKCUSoft (case sensitive)
and then (e.g.) for just the logged on user you should be able to do this
to simulate what the .inf file is telling us:

regsvr32 /n /i:HKCUSoft inetcpl.cpl

So that would probably get back the UI that you saw (but only for that user)

Then, in order to actually use it, according to the commands given
at [IESoftenRegisterDll] you could also have to re-register urlmon.dll
and wininet.dll with similar commands, thus implying that they also both
have such an entry point.

You can try using DependencyWalker to confirm these guesses about
new entry point names in those modules. Similarly you would then see
new entry points to support the other options implied by this .inf file.

I think you must be missing something in your admininstrator's UI though
which would allow you to access all these options more naturally without
having to be aware of their implementation. Perhaps there is something
new in secpol.msc or gpedit.msc? These also are guesses; there may
be other console apps which would be more appropriate for implementing
a UI for such features or there may even be a new console app devoted
exclusively to this application; etc.

Now that you have some specific questions about implementation to ask
you would probably get a more informed answer in a newsgroup which
specialized in security or admin for your OS or even in one which specializes
in admin or security in general.

Good luck

Robert
