I am using Windows 98SE with Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. The web pages are
loading so slow that I'm getting time out errors. I have cable internet
service. I discovered I had the Trojanavalert virus through running my
weeking full system scan. I have tried to download free files for RegCure or
RegTool, but I get the eroor Internet Explorer cannot open this site or is
unavailable. I even got this error when I tried to log on to this website. I
don't know if this virus did some damaged to the registry or not. This
problem seemed to have started around the time that MSN luanched the BING
search engine. Don't know if it's coincidence or not. I all received some
notice when running Scan Disk that there was some sort of long file name
entry made. I have no clue what that is but have never seen it before. Can
someone please help?? I'm ready to smash this think but can't really afford
another one right now. Thanks.

This is 9X right?

IF SO:
Might be time to get hijackthis and do a scan. You likely have other
malware causing issues.

What anti-virus and version?

What other protections are you using [must not be too good, you got
infected].

IF one of the NTs?

Might be conficker: blocks these sites, search terms, or when in any
portion of the URL [among several other, anything that might be related
to anti-virus and the like,, and it does cause time-out errors to appear
or sites show as unavailable]:
antivir ca. cert. conficker f-secure kaspersky mcafee microsoft msdn.
msft. norton panda safety.live sans. symantec technet trendmicro
windowsupdate

AND/OR you might check your hosts files for 01 entries [if you haven't
added these entries yourself or via some other hosts update,, might
check for this in 9X as well].

Regardless of which MS OS, it appears your protection scheme is not
providing the protection needed.

Post what you are using for suggestions and replacements...

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

PS: If you think your Registry needs to be "cleaned" or "repaired," read

Gees,,, forgive my missing that you ARE running 9X... no good excuse
other than I need some sleep..

Are you indicating that you are having this difficulty in IE or that
you just have it installed?

I have been running this version of IE for awhile. I just started having
trouble in the last month to month in a half. I am running Norton Antivirus.

When does your Norton AntiVirus (NAV) subscription expire?

NB: No version of NAV has been supported in Win9x for many years.

Okay.. IE isn't the best use but there are not many browser left for
9X so its limitations are now providing a measure of protection [thought
I wouldn't be recommending IE ever again].

As Pa indicates, Norton is not supported and hasn't been for quite
awhile in 9X. That you got whacked by a virus should tell you that
regardless of what you would like to believe, Norton isn't doing what it
should. If you have encountered any of the newer DOS/9X malware and/or
virus out here and running outdated signatures and engines [or even just
outdated engines], you should EXPECT to get whacked repeatedly and
regularly. Weekly or even daily checks haven't been a reliable method
for several years.. there is a REASON every Anti-virus application uses
on-access, on-load and includes "as received" checks... Windows users
are in a WAR against hackers and malware at the moment, and the hackers
and malware are winning that war,,,

As previously suggested, run the additional scans and hijackthis. You
*might* be able to save the system... just takes a few posts in one of
forums that check the logs and system files to find out if you can.

As for this month or so aspect that has been complained about
effecting sites and computers, think about the relationship of these to
your computer and Internet usage:
... EVERY government [US and elsewhere] site [and most of the public
networking] has been hacked in the last three months - several million
more sites and computers have been added to the "bot farm/zombie"
networks - were they admitting it, likely every hosting service and ISP
has been raided and hacked - every "social networking service" has been
hacked ... Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Cisco, the Anti-virus sites, IBM,
and the list goes on... have all been hacked in some form...

IMO:
JAVA and Flash should be banned since they've become the primary
distribution method and are apparently impossible correct the flaws in -
off-site ads should be banned as they've become un-reliable no matter
the source, and yet one more hack entry point [what's to ensure that ad
service hasn't been hijacked or its IP or its ads] - sites owners, SEO,
and web designers who use more than two or three API and JAVA scripts
should be locked in a dark room for several years and fed nothing but
bread and water [I mean really 20 to 40 scripts PER PAGE WTFITA] - sites
that require you go to ten pages to read ONE article should be sent to
the Internet grave yard - sites which fail to provide alternative
NON-Flash pages should be dropped into the Mariana Trench, neaaaahhhh,
ain't gonna happen... so how do we protect ourselves...

No Alternative
