I am having difficulty installing SQL Server 2000 SP4 on a server. I
tried uninstalling/reinstalling about five different times and it
continues fail with the following: taken out of the sqlstp.log
(Setup Log). I also used a different profile during the last
attempt. It failed with the same error.
In short, there is something strange going on with the server. Any
suggestions appreciated!!!

SQL Server configuration failed.

I also attempted to complete the steps for a manual cleaning of the
system to ensure there are no residual files left from a previous
installation per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290991#4

No luck. My next step is to have the server re-imaged. But a
solution would be preferable!

Thanks for any suggestions.

I remember running into this problem a few years ago, but can't recall all
the details now. One thing I would check is whether Shared Memory protocol is
disabled via Client Configuration Utility.
