Update KB972260 released today disables network connections in Win

Just to let everyone else know (who's internet isn't working...so hope this
helps), that the security update just released this morning by M$ to all the
Win7 RC users called KB972260 is what is making your internet connection not
work. Uninstall it, and enjoy using the internet once again.

Wireless working perfectly OK here on Win7 RC after installing that
update.....

This really is a problem and not only on Win7. Thi update also stopped IE
from working on WIndows Server 2003 as well.

Err sorry, the newsgroups are NOT inundated with complaints about this -
this seems to be the ONLY thread about it.
And as I posted - I'm currently using Win7 RC with this update installed and
have NO problems at all.

Feel free to begin a new thread about your specific problems & your Windows
version. State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., Win2003 SP1)
in your first post.

Same here with Windows Server 2003. HP systems management homepage and
related programs not accessible via IE8 after latest
kb972260/kb973825/kb973923 update. Uninstalled the updates and still no
access. Had to restore server with preinstallation backup. Now everything is
working fine but the system is not updated.

For what it's worth, I had a a similar issue with Windows XP Home nd IE7
today (Internet connection failed after installation of KB972260, DNS and
ping still working, but IE, Firefox, MSN, Outlook Express all fail to
connect) on an MSI Wind U100 netbook. This had already happened once before
after the automatic update to IE8 and the latest security updates a few weeks
ago, at which time I fixed it by rolling back IE8.

Today I seem to have finally nailed it by

- Uninstalling KB972260
- Running the Norton Removal Tool (norton_removal_tool.exe) from
htp://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
- Installing KB972260

My working hypothesis is that some leftover of Norton Antivirus (2008 or
2009, not certain) that was preinstalled on the machine and that we removed
some weeks ago interferes with one of the fixes in KB972260.

Well I am having the same problem with this update but this suggestion didnt
help me at all. (btw i am using Vista (Home Premium) & IE8) i also tried
reseting internet options to default and that didnt work either.. however
this update is not exactly disabling my internet because my sidebar gadgets
that use the internet are still working, and the diagnose button says nothing
is wrong. it seems IE just wont diplay any webpages. if anyone else has found
any other fixes let me know. i have sent a help request to WUsupport, and if
they can figure it out i'll post that here aswell

I called Microsoft Support at (800) 936-5700. They had me go to a
command prompt and enter "netsh firewall reset" and my problem was
resolved.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 with AVG Free 8.5 and IE7.

well they got back to me a couple days ago and they're advice was to either
hide the update or disable all start-up programs and try to figure out which
one was interfering with the update by trial and error =p. i decided to just
hide it and be done with it. i have kaspersky, so i doubt i'll get hacked
and/or hijacked, which was what the update was for. btw if u dont know how to
hide an update just go to your updates list (Control panel/security/windows
update/view available updates)and right-click. A drop down menu should appear
and u can select to hide it. and it will never bother u again! =]

This worked good for a while but now IE is failing to connect again. I
ran an application that wanted to set an exception to the Windows
Firewall. That's what seems to me to have triggered the re-occurrence
but I'm not sure. The "netsh firewall reset" doesn't seem to help now.

When a fresh instance of IE7 won't connect, I close it. Wait for IE to
end. Restart and try again. After a while (3 times last time) it'll work
again. Once it'll load the first page, that instance of IE is good.

The ticket was SRX1109092261ID.

I reopened the problem SRX1109092261ID today with Microsoft. They
called me this afternoon and told me to remove KB972260 and hide it. I
asked them to send me an e-mail telling me that and they agreed. I have
not yet received that e-mail. It's only been 30 minutes or so.

They said they would call me back with what to do next. The phone #
that called me was Kirkland, WA 425-704-20xx.

Part of the confusion (for me, at least) is that you hijacked a thread about
IE8 running in Win7 to discuss a similar problem in WinXP SP3 running IE7.

I would call them back and ask, "Seeing as KB972260 is a critical security
update, isn't my computer at risk without it being installed?" Let me know
what they tell you, please.

This is NOT a WinXP 64-bit computer, correct?

Has a Norton or a McAfee application ever been installed on the computer?

Has the computer ever been connected to the internet without a valid &
fully-updated anti-virus application installed?

Any chance you've done a Repair Install recently?

Sorry. Google search dropped me here and it seemed from the first post
that the underlying problem was KB972260, not Win 7 and IE8. Other
posters have referenced XP Home and Windows Server 2003 with the common
theme being KB972260.

Could you help me move this to a different thread?

On the phone, I challenged them on this very point and asked them for
an e-mail documenting their instructions. They have not complied with
that request. I followed up my verbal request with an e-mail request.
They have not complied with that request either.

I can PM you the complete phone # if that would help.

That was fun. I called them back and asked about the e-mail I had
requested. They had my e-mail address wrong but didn't seem to have any
record of an e-mail being sent.

The representative said "*This is an ongoing issue and we are right now
suggesting all the customers who have an issue to uninstall this update.
We may come up with a hot fix for this. Only certain configurations have
a problem.*"

I was very careful to write down exactly what he said.

I asked him to send me an e-mail with these instructions since KB972260
is a critical security update. He sent me the following:

As suggested by you, you can uninstall the Security Update
KB972260 and block it from getting reinstalled.

I was still on the phone with him when I received this and told him
that this wasn't good enough. It makes it sound like it was my idea to
remove KB972260. I asked him to resend the e-mail with a clearer
statement that it was Microsoft's recommendation that I uninstall and
block KB972260.

HE DECLINED and asked me to bounce this back to the previous
representative! He gave me an e-mail address to send my request to. I
haven't received anything back from them. It's been about an hour.

I didn't get a response until I called Microsoft back this afternoon.
They sent me an e-mail with the following text:

Thank you for taking the time to send us your comments
regarding the service you recently received from Microsoft.

Please go ahead and remove Security Update KB972260 and block it from
getting reinstalled. For any help in this regard, Please reply to this
email or give us a call back.

Please continue to provide us with feedback. It is your support that
enables us to move another step towards our goal. We hope to get your
continued support for Microsoft.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Product and Services.

I asked if there was any "Fix It" or other mitigation to the risk of
running without KB972260 and they said there wasn't.

Luckily FireFox is my primary browser.

Hi there,

Yes, the KB972260 update is a problem. I am running Vista Home Premium
and IE7. When this update first installed it promptly shut my computer
down without asking me! The computer just shut down. When I turned it
on again it wouldn't recognise my DIV connection to my monitor. I
managed to get it to start again by connecting the monitor with the RGA
plug, but I had to turn the computer off and on at the power point about
ten times before it would restart. It tried to start twice each time
then stopped. Microsoft support says this update is for XP. What is it
doing installing on my Vista?

To solve the problem I had to Restore to a point a few days before the
current date and turn my update off. When I first did a Restore the
update was still on, and after a few hours it installed the update again
without my permission causing the same problem.

Now I am running my computer with update permanently turned off. This
is unacceptable for the long term. What am I to do?
