[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint

Hello,
What version of PowerPoint are you using?
Have you installed the PowerPoint Viewer (and, if so, what version)?
What is the e-mail program or site that you are using?

I bought a computer with the total Microsoft Office 2003 pre-installed.
Before the trial period was up, my PPS viewer was able to open a PPS file
that was attached to an e-mail. When my trial period was up, the **warning
display** come on and asked for a reqestration key. I did not buy the
MicroSoft Office Package so I did not have a key. The program would still run
put if the PPS file had embedded sound, the sound would not play. The
**Waring Display** also said that if I do not wish to buy the 'key' that by
using the add/remove program I could delete it from my system. This I did. I
subscribe to a site that sends out weekly PPS files as part of their e-mails.
It lets the reader know that if they do not have a PPS viewer that it can be
optained and they post a link:
To view these files you will need the Power Point viewer which is available
for FREE download at...http://snipurl.com/2fz9 The download is for Microsoft
Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 ver 6.0.2600.0. On my old computer all I had to
do was download it and it ran fine from emails (Windows ME). As soon as I
tried to run the install PPS viewer on my Windows XP system I receive the
notification that the association program was not found and that I was to
goto Control Panel folder options and select the appropriate file to run the
file with the PPS extention. I did this and selected 'OK/Apply'. I then did a
system re-boot and tried to view the file from the email again with the same
result and the same 'error'. I got the information about the control panel
and folder options from here in the community. Since my orginal post I have
repeated all the steps from removing to installing and setting up the
association section in folder options. I'm again stuck where I was at the
begining of my 'orginal' post.
From your email, instead of trying to run the presentation file, save it to your
hard drive. Then open the PowerPoint Viewer and from the dialog you can open
the presentation file.
Let us know if you have questions.

The full version of PPT allows you to create and view PPT files. The free
Viewer only allows you to view files. So you only need the Viewer to do what
you want. You shouldn't be receiving errors looking for qualifying products
or anything like that.
After you downloaded the free PowerPoint Viewer, did you actually install
it? You have to double-click ppviewer.exe to start the Viewer install
process.
You said this:

I suspect that the error you described is the one you'd get when you attempt
to open/view a PPS/PPT file; it's not the error you'd get when attempting to
install the PPT Viewer itself. ?When you try to open/view a PPS/PPT file, if
Windows cannot find the PPT Viewer (or a full standalone version of PPT), it
will allow you to choose the appropriate file to run.
Try double-clicking the file you downloaded from http://snipurl.com/2fz9 to
install it.

I might have missed this from your previous posts... but....
What is application you use for viewing/reading your e-mail?
What is your e-mail provider?
We REALLY want to get to the root cause of the problem you are experiencing
and having this additional information would help our testers reproduce the
problem you are experiencing.
Thanks,
With that additional information I was able to repro this internally under
the following configuration:
* Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2)
* PowerPoint Viewer 2003 installed (no version of PowerPoint installed).
* Attachments in Outlook Express
On the surface, it appears to be some kind of regression in Outlook Express
caused by SP-2, but I'll leave it to the testing groups to find over the
ownership of the bug.
For now, the workarounds are:
* Save attachment and open from Windows explorer or PowerPoint Viewer 2003
directly
* Remove PowerPoint Viewer 2003 and install PowerPoint Viewer 97 (which
doesn't exhibit this problem)
* Remove Service Pack 2 for Windows XP (I definitely do NOT recommend this
due to the many security enhancements it contains).
I anyone else is experiencing this problem with a different e-mail client
or with PowerPoint (instead of Viewer), please let me know. I'll post
update once testing has determined the root case.

Hello,
Testing has come up with the following workaround.
1) Install PowerPoint Viewer 97 to the same folder as PowerPoint Viewer
2003.
2) Rename the respective executables for the two viewers as follows:
2a) Rename PowerPoint Viewer 97 executable to something other than
"pptview.exe" or "ppview32.exe"
2b) Rename PowerPoint Viewer 2003 executable "ppview32.exe"
This will "trick" Outlook Express into using PowerPoint Viewer 2003
(instead of PowerPoint Viewer 97) to open attachments.
You can get PowerPoint Viewer 97 from:

I personally would not want any program to run when saved from an email.

Make sure you have all the patches and updates installed for your version.
If it still does not appear, then do a detect and repair and see if that
does not help.
In the meantime, you can always just save your presentation as a
"Presentation .ppt" then change the .ppt extension to.pps. the only
difference is how they open.

Most of us who spend any time here use munged email addresses. To do anything
else is to invite spam by the trailerload.
Besides, the idea is to keep the discussion here, not in private email, so all
can contribute if they know answers or learn if they don't.
Most likely it's a security setting in your email software that prevents
potentially evil files from running when you doubleclick them in your email
program.
I guess it imposes a certain level of protection if you're forced to think about
it by making you copy the file to a folder someplace before you're allowed to
run it.

But (since I don't use Outlook or OE) there may be some way of overriding it.
Let's see if anyone has any bright ideas.
