Is it possible to view a .pps file even if do not have powerpoint installed
on my machine?

If you do have PowerPoint, you stil need a PowerPoint player.

In addition to King Marsh's suggestions, you can also get a trial version of
Microsoft Office from the Microsoft site that will let you create and play
PowerPoint files (ppt, pps, pptx, etc.).

Essentially, there's no real difference between PPT and PPS files -- look
