Try going to Tools > Options > View and set the Default View at the bottom.

Sonia,

I think you missed the op's point. It's not the view of the Presentation that is reverting, it's the view in the Explorer window that is opened to retieve a file. They are two different things.

I had noticed the same behavior in Win2000 with Office 200, however, a quick check of Win XP + Office XP does NOT exhibit this same behavior - Sooooo, maybe upgrades are in order;-)) Sorry, I don't know of another fix.

Oh, thanks. I was reading it as "every time I open a file" rather than "every
time I want to open a file". Yes, as many people request changes, they do get
addressed in newer versions of the software. If Adam is using PowerPoint 97 or
2000, they aren't nearly as robust as PowerPoint 2002 and 2003 are.

Tom had it right, but I'm running PPT 2003 on XP. If this isn't the behavior I should expect to be seeing, is it worth me flushing some directory of preferences or reinstalling Office2003?

I'm new to this board, thanks very much for the prompt advice!

FWIW, the same thing happens here -- when I go to File/Open, I always get Preview view, even though my WinXP settings are set to details.

Using WinXP and PPT 2003 as well.

Since all of the MS apps call Explorer (with special arguments, I assume to get the look) for this function, I must assume I have found the 'magic bullet' to get a more acceptable performance. The one feature I can think of that just might have an impact is that I have used the Toll/Folder Options /View 'Apply to all folders' option in Explorer to set them all to details . Oh, and I selected the 'Remember each folder's view settings' in the Advanced Settings.

Yup, that's it. I just checked. Go to Tools/Folder Options /View in an Explorer window and click the 'Remember each folder's view settings' in the Advanced Settings and the Open file view should become static, as desired.

Hope that helps.

I'll try it again at home, but I always set up all my folders views to
details. And yes, I click the "apply to all folders" thing.

So maybe it's the "remember each folder's view settings" that would make it
then "stick" in PPT?

Hm. It seems I already had "remember each folder's settings" selected in the
Advanced Settings area.

So I tried deselecting that, applying to all folders, then reselecting it
and applying to all folders.

But I still get a preview window when I use File/Open in PPT. Nuts.

At last a way round that annoying problem. Hooray!

Ah but wait. It works in File/Open - Great, but use Insert Image and...
a dark cloud has just descended and frustration has just set in again.

Why oh why can't Microsoft obey their own conventions?

Dang! I'm glad it works for you, but I'm really bummed I can't get it to
work here. I'm obviously doing *something* wrong, though.

For the Insert/Images, Steve has a $20 utility (Starter Set Plus) that will
take care of this. Check http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00167.htm

My experience is like Echo's. I checked the setting & it was already set.

Is there some cache that could be corrupted? Any chance this might improve if it uninstalled & reinstalled? It's driving me that crazy:)

Well, I don't know what to say. It works for me in Office XP's version of PPT (2002) on both Win 2000 and XP equipped machines. It clearly does not work in PPT 2000 as this knowledgebase article attests:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242520

I've tried to figure out what other than the 'Remember folder settings' might be involved, but can't see what it might be. One thing I haven't been able to check is whether the fact that I've turned off the web view in explorer has any impact. I can't seem to reinvoke that feature. I've search menu after menu looking for the switch without success and don't know what registry entry controls. i doubt that that has anything to do with it, but ...

Beats me whether it's involved here, but I think what you're looking for is at:

Doubleclick My Computer to open it
Tools, Folder Options
General tab, there are options for web content on desktop and in folders

Hope that helps solve at least *that* li'l mystery. ;-)

You know, that's exactly where it used to be in Win2k, but It's just not there in XP (on my machine, anyway). Strangest thing, that.

Dang. Yep - I was looking at it in Win2K. Seems to be awol on an XP/Home and
an XP/Tablet system.

I wonder if the issue, then, is PPT 2003? Both Adam and I are using it on
WinXP, it seems.

Purely retorical question: "Why does MS do that - give in one version and take away in the next?"

They did the same thing with multi-monitor usage between NT and 2000 and between PPT97 and PPT 2000 - only to reverse themselves between Win 2000 and XP and PPT 2000 and 2002 - because users exclaimed so loudly when they took it out, I guess. BTW, they haven't reversed course again on this in PPT 2003, have they? If they did, I'll never upgrade again. I have a weekly activity that absolutely demands two monitor operation (one control screen and one presentation screen). I limped along using a paper handout copy as a reference for control until we upgraded to 2002 in XP.

I don't think either Adam or Echo is losing it. Adam stated very
clearly at the beginning of the thread that he's using PPT 2003, and
so did Echo. How so many posters missed that, I don't know.

I'm using PPT 2003, and I have exactly the same problem as Adam and
Echo. I never had this problem in any previous version of PPT, so it's
definitely an issue with 2003.

Thanks everyone for their insights. You all have been a lot of help in confirming it's not just me seeing this peculiar behavior.

I'm adapting via workarounds: mainly I've simplified my folder trees to be able to access stuff more directly without "sort by date modified" or whatever. Not ideal, but it's reduced the frustration a bit.

For those of you not yet using PPT 2003, I do think the other improvements are valuable. To me, it's a three steps fwd, two step back kind of thing.

Thanks again!

Okay, I just upgraded from PP 97 to PP 2002, running on Windows 2000 (I'm in
a corporate environment, I guess that's the best they can do!) and I'm
experiencing a similar problem. When inserting pictures from a file location,
I'm accustomed to working in preview mode (where I see a list of files on the
left and a preview on the right) and EVERY TIME I insert a picture, I have to
reselect my preferred view. It keeps defaulting to Thumbnail view, but I'm
not even getting thumbnails--just icons. This is very time-consuming and
irritating. I tried the workaround in my folder settings, but unfortunately
the "preview" option from PP isn't offered as an option in the Windows
Explorer application. Can anyone help?

Just my 2p worth.

Running XP & Off2003 all SPs intalled. I just hate the Powerpoint open
dialogue box, why oh why won't it remember where it last opened from, OK
it does if you don't close the program. Come on Microsoft play by the
rules!!

Oh and the preview/tiles annoyance. I got around it by changing the
folder view back to classic, who wants a cheap Mac GUI anyway, then when
you next insert a picture change the view to icons, insert, then close
Powerpoint. Next time you open it and insert picture it should be in the
same icon view, albeit, it will still insist that you want to look in
"my pictures".

<RANT>
And another thing, it just makes me laugh that they know about the long
filename bug for video et al, but insist on using half the allowed
length eg. "C:\Documents and Settings\My Computer\My Documents\My
Pictures" before we, as users, you know the CUSTOMERS, do our bit.

None or I'd have it set to go where *I* want it to go today here. <g>

Apparently this trick works for some people, not others.
