I am having difficulty getting imported JPG images to display in the Powerpoint
slideshow and slidesorter. They DO appear in the normal view. I have checked that
filters are installed. I am using PPT 2000 both at home and office, but this
problem occurs only on my home computer. When I try to view a slideshow, I get
only a white screen. I can see text and some clip art, but no JPG images, no
colored background from a design template and no horizontal bars from the
templates, either.

Try booting into SAFE MODE and then opening PPT and then open your
presentation and play it. It won't look pretty, but if you do see the JPG
images, most likely you need to visit the website of your graphics card
manufacturer and upgrade to the appropriate driver.

The graphics card is upgraded, but I don't think that is the problem. With some
further investigation, I learn that SOME of my slides are displayed and others
shown in a blank (white) screen. The 6th and 7th slides are displayed, then the
next 6 blank, then the 13th and 14th are displayed, then the next 6 blank, then
the 20th and 21st slides, etc.

All slides are essentially the same -- only a JPG image inserted on a color
scheme background taken from the PPT templates.

Is there some sort of timing command I am missing? (I checked, and the blank-
screen slides are NOT marked to be hidden.)

What operating system are you running? Who is the manufacturer of your
graphics card? Are they different than at work?

You might try deleting your \Windows\Temp files and doing a defrag. Then
adjust Hardware Acceleration down a notch and see if that helps. However
the answers to the questions above might also give us some hints about where
the problem may lie.

Operating system is Windows 98
Graphics card is 16 MB Voodoo Banshee AGP (creative labs?)
probably certainly different from the work system. I'll try the Temp cleanup and
defrag. Thanks for your help. This is driving me crazy.

M. Daniel,
Are all the jpgs from the same source. Any chance the "invisible" ones
are from a Mac that had Quick Time turned on in Photoshop when saving.
That's a known problem.

Can you open the problem jpgs in photoediting program and save them as
another file format and try them again?

All the JPGs are from the same source -- scanned photos I using an HP scanner and
saving directly to a file with 150 dpi resolution. Quicktime was not involved,
and neither was a Mac. I have tried converting to GIF or BMP and inserting -- no
luck.

I did as Sonia suggested -- removed temp files and defragged. It did not have any
effect. It's a mystery why some slides display and others do not. I thought it
might be the image on those particular slides, so I used the "successful" images
on slides earlier in the show, and they do not display on the earlier slides but
will on the later ones (!).

None of the images or their backgrounds show up in the slidesorter view. If I use
a slide with text, I will get only the text, but no objects or graphics.

M,

Did you try running the presentation in "safe mode"? This certainly sounds
like a video display problem and will probably require an updated driver for
your card.

And since the driver seems to be updated, I'd try turning down hardware
acceleration and experimenting with different combinations of that and
the display color settings. If that doesn't do the trick, I'd probably
opt for a generic driver and see if that helps any.
