Henrik, can you please explain how you would add labels in an Excel xy
scatter with an add-in? I have never used add-ins before?

Also, is it possible to have several data series in an xy PPT scatter?
(Basically, I want to have one set of points one color/marker type, and
another set as a different color/marker type.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the XY Chart Labeler for Excel:
http://www.appspro.com/Utilities/ChartLabeler.htm

Yes, you can have several data series in a scatter chart in PPT. Just put
the data in the appropriate row. To see an example, insert a new chart,
which should default to a column chart with 3 data series. Right-click and
choose Chart Type. Select the XY Scatter type. When you hit OK, the chart
will change to a scatter chart with East, West and North data series.

Additionally, sometimes my data looks like this for a scatter chart:

2 4 5 2 4 6 2 4 8
series A
series B
series C

Ah, man, that's hard to do here. See screenshot here:

Basically, repeat your axis values on the top row as necessary. I find that
that lets me keep my data together when the axis values aren't exactly the
same.
