Change default shapes in Power Point Template

In Power Point 2003, my design template has shadows for all shapes and
shadows on text inside text boxes. How do I remove the shadows? I tried the
Format Autoshap, Format Object, and Format Text Box to no avail.

You'll have to remove the shadow, then reset your defaults.

For shadows on shapes, use the shadow tool on the drawing toolbar. Select
"no shadow" there.

For textboxes themselves, do the same. For the text in the textboxes, turn
off the text shadow under Format/Font (or use the S icon on the standard
toolbar). If necessary, turn off the shadow on the textbox itself (which in
a no-fill textbox may show up as a text shadow) using the shadow tool on the
toolbar also.

After you've done that, do the following in this order:
1. Right-click the textbox and choose "set autoshape default."
2. Right-click one of the autoshapes and choose "set autoshape default."

It's a little bizarre, but just trust me that you want to set the autoshape
default on the textbox first.

Tried you idea on PPT 2003 SP1, works for modifying the shadows and font
color, but the textbox 'fill' color does not stick... reverts back to 'no
fill' every time...

Could there be another setting somewhere that wins every time?

Yeah, it's confusing. Textboxes are kind of like special autoshapes, and,
while the autoshapes hold a fill and line color, the textboxes don't. You
can simply use the rectangle tool on your drawing tool (it's really an
autoshape) and just start typing in it if you need a filled textbox, though.

The reason I have people set their autoshape default after setting their
textbox default is because if the textbox has no line and no fill (which is
the most common type of textbox, I believe), then their autoshapes won't
have a line and fill after they set autoshapes default based on the
no-line/no-fill textbox. So, every time they'd draw a line, they'd have to
click the line color button in order to see it. I've seen this frustrate
people to no end, so I try to avoid the problem in the first place. :-)
