I have not been able to download to email from the ATT/yahoo server all day
per the error mssg 0x80004005 on my XP SP2 machine. I am able to send email
from OE and both send/receive mail online. The ATT advanced tech support ran
all the tests, confirmed the pop/smtp and port settings are correct and said
and the server is fine and pointed me to the MS article at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299496.

I followed these instructions:
CAUSE - This behavior can occur because of a corrupted .mbx file, typically
the Inbox.
RESOLUTION - To resolve this behavior, rename the affected .mbx file, and
then restart Outlook Express or Outlook 2003:

After renaming old inbox.mbx file >> inbox.old, I restarted OE to an empty
inbox as expected but then getting the same message - "An unknown error has
occurred. Account: 'SBC Yahoo! Mail-tghockett', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x80004005"

Anybody know what I am missing/ how to resolve?

Thanks in advance ...

This might have been obvious to other folks, but one piece of information
left of MS' instructions was to reboot XP after deleting the bad inbox.dbx
file. After a clean re-boot of my XP this morning, OE6 is receiving mail as
it should.

You found an article for OE 4.
Surely, you don't have OE 4.

You must have a really old computer to have an Inbox.mbx from OE4, which
came with the first edition of Win98 but not the second. Nothing you do to
any of the MBX files from OE4 will have any effect on what is going on with
OE6 or WinXP SP2. Sounds like the POP3 server was down for a while.

For future reference, can you explain to me how OE6 would generate an
OE4-related error message? Your'e right that this XP pc is coming up on 5
yrs old, but I would have thought when OE was upgraded to OE6 there wouldn't
be remnants of an older OE version (never had Win98 on this pc for what its
worth).

Thanks ...

You're right PA Bear - I mistyped & I meant to write indox.dbx.

Not to worry. The article you mention is very old, but still relevant and it
mentions MBX and DBX files.

You receive an error message when you try to receive e-mail messages in
Outlook 2003 or in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299496

I didn't even try to respond myself because there has been so much trouble
with AT&T/SBC/Yahoo, (whatever they call themselves today), that I can't
keep up with their problems.

To me, it is all but amazing that an AT&T/SBC/Yahoo tech would not only come
up with that fix, but that it actually was the problem. My money was on an
AT&T/SBC/Yahoo problem from the moment I saw your post.

Problem is not solved. I applied the following method,

To resolve this behavior, rename the affected .mbx file, and then restart Outlook Express:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type Inbox.mbx or Inbox.dbx.
In the Look in box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive C), and then click Find Now.
Right-click the Inbox.mbx file that appears or the Inbox.dbx file that appears, and then click Rename.
Type Inbox.old, and then click OK.
Restart Outlook Express.

Problem is still there. What should i do. Can any brother or sister help???????????? HELP???

Maybe only a side issue, but why are you not on XP SP3? This upgrade has
been available for years.

Please start your own new thread instead of replying to this three year
old one. Give a details description of what issue you are having and
copy/paste any error message in the thread so it is exact.

I personally regret installing SP3 on many of my computers. As it often
breaks OE6 compacting (hangs on folders.dbx). It breaks System Restore
on all of my computers, older applications doesn't run or are unstable,
etc.

I am not a big believer in reformat and reinstall. But it might come
down to this. As that is about the only way to uninstall SP3 on these
computers at this point.

The post you are replying to is over three years old? You did not make it?
So you have a new problem. From the Internet I found the following:

<http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-networking/error-0x80004005/ed692d49-5af3-4d6a-9287-bd3a5c4afe6a>
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/232480>
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296512>

The entire list that I found:

Hopefully one of those links has a solution for you.

I never regretted it. I don't use MSOE on either computer still running
XP;SP3. System restore works just fine. And all of my older application
which ran prior to SP3 still worked after installation.

I regretted it and I have dozens of computers. Even my KWorld tuner
doesn't work with SP3 either. There was NO NEW FEATURES with SP3! So
what is the point of installing it?

And no, I don't always use OE6. But I never found one that works
efficiently with newsgroups like OE6 does. And I tried many of them.
Like Forte, Thunderbird, XNews, Gravity, etc. And none of them work as
hard as OE6 does.

Like for example if I want to see if anybody posted a reply to one of my
posts. Under OE6 all I do is to press CTRL-H and there they are. So
simple and so useful. Say I remember reading a post that said something
about say KWorld. But where did I see that before? OE6 downloads the
posts which I have read before. So searching through the message body
itself is right in the database. And the search is so fast. But it is so
fast because it was designed to be when computers had slow CPUs, limited
RAM, and tiny hard drives.

All threads I have posted to percolate to the top without user intervention.
My articles are marked with a number, and color-coded, as well.

Dialog didn't impress me at all. As it is far too cluttered for my
tastes for one. And the text is so small you need a 30 inch monitor to
read it. And if you make the text larger, Dialog becomes useless.
