How to include the greater than ">" sign in reply quotes?

Is there a way to make the greater than ">" feature in Outlook's
Preference/Email Options work? I have it set to use a greater than
sign. However, it puts the "|" sign in front of each line of original
text.

What I really would like is to be able to type in between lines of
quoted text with my comments, and not have my comments prefixed with
the "|" sign. It's similar to replying to messages in the Usenet
groups. You can type your response to each thought just below what
was typed in the message you're replying to.

"On replies and Forwards" Section
"When Replying to a Message" - Select "Prefix each line of the original
Message"
Enter ">" in the "Prefix each Line with" Option
Deselect the "Prefix my comments with" option box.

Henry. Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond to my message with
something so obviously right in the face of the user. I spend a couple of
hours trying to figure out this problem. However, after reading your
message, I went back and looked at it. It seems that my problem is with
specific email.

I have a client that uses a service called Incredimail, who sent me a list
of items. It has some type of stationary background. When I click reply
that client's mail is contained at the bottom as if it's in some type of
cell. There's no way to type below that sell, because all new text below
will have the "|" in front of it and indented. I don't see any way of
making any new text stop behaving that way. There's no way to append new
text without the "|" and indenting below their quoted letter.

I tried using all the options I could find to remove that formating. I
tried using the HTML option, Rich text option, plain text option...
everything.

Do you know of a way to break out of that behavior with email that you might
receive from somebody? If you can't identify with the behavior because you
haven't noticed it, maybe I can figure out another way of explaining it,
including putting pictures somewhere so that you can see what I'm getting.

Thanks again for your response. Until reading your message, I was so stuck
on that particular message that I failed to consider checking and noticing
that it was only that letter that was behaving that way.

I have no experience of Incerdimail, but my guess from the website is that
at the very least they would be using HTML and possibly Java Applets ( in
which case the Applet is probably controlling the formatting within it's
"box" and you're at it's mercy. )

I'd be inclined to open the original in Source View and check it out. May
not be much use to you if you're not familiar with HTML or Java.

One thing you might try to do is set the replies to be in Plain Text. There
is a chance it will just grab the text and not the HTML Tags and Applet
controls ( if any ).

Thank you, Henry. With your help and assurance and a lot of persistence, I
finally got it resolved. It seems that changing it to plain text as I had
been doing before may not have been taking effect until I exit and restart
Outlook (or some other combination). But finally it's resolved where the
quotes work as expected and I can insert my comments between the quotes.

By the way I notice that messages from places like Ebay have the same
characteristic. I hadn't noticed it as a problem because I never saw a
reason to itemize my response as such.
