I have been using Windows 7 build 7232 for some time now without a problem.
However, Outlook 2007 now will not let me open up a URL from within an email
even though this has worked previously. I get the error message "the
operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer".

I have tried the usual IE reset process but this does not work and I can
confirm that the registry does not have an entry here:-

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command

can anyone please tell me how to resolve this problem?

Thanks for trying Peter but you will see from my original message that I
have already tried all the usual rest options and none of them have worked.

However, I have now examined my registry carefully and established that the
following normal entries are missing:-

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.htm
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.html

I then created entries for each of these missing items and then made the
following changes.

I created the following three entries in the htmlfile entry:-

Name = Default Type = REG_SZ Data = HTML Document
Name = AppUserModelID Type = REG_SZ Data =
Microsoft.InternetExplorer.Default
Name = FriendlyTypeName Type = REG_SZ Data =
@c:\Windows\System32\ieframe.dll,-912

Since I use the Opera browser then I created the following three entries in
the .htm entry:-

Name = Default Type = REG_SZ Data = Opera.HTML
Name = Content Type Type = REG_SZ Data = text/html
Name = PerceivedType Type = REG_SZ Data = text

Since I use the Opera browser then I created the following three entries in
the .html entry:-

Name = Default Type = REG_SZ Data = Opera.HTML
Name = Content Type Type = REG_SZ Data = text/html
Name = PerceivedType Type = REG_SZ Data = text

I am delighted to report that my problem is now solved.

Performing a reset in your web browser _should_ have repaired those missing
entries, but it's good to hear the manual approach worked for you.

Hello Brian,

In the past resetting the browser has fixed such problems (which I suspect
are caused by registry cleaning software) and, like you, I cannot understand
why it did not work this time. Fortunately I have a Laptop which is also
running Windows 7 and I faced the very simple task of comparing the two
registries and then adding the missing elements.

Many thanks for your response.

Stan
