That's done with the Regional and Language Options control panel applet.
Click Customize to the right of the language drop-down, choose the Date tab
and Modify the Long date format. Adding "dddd" to the front of the string
in the drop-down (you can type in it - you don't have to accept only what
the drop-down shows) will add the week day name spelled out (i.e., Monday)
and adding "ddd" will add a short weekday name (i.e., Mon).

Details: In Regional and Language Options, Englsih (Canada) Customize, my
long date format is dddd, MMMM d, yyyy. The date shown above today's events
is Tuesday, September 18. I want the year to appear aft the date but it is
absent. I also want the font to be larger. Could you please tell me how to do
this?
Above the calendars, at the upper right of my display, just to the left of a
tiny representation of a calendar, there appears September 18, 2007. This
font is the correct size, but I would like the week day name to precede it.
Could you please tell me how to do this?
