after upgrading from office 2003 sp2 to the new sp3 my Brother MFC-8460N will
no longer "scan to email". It performs it's function as well as it's always
had, but when it goes to create the new message in outlook with the scanned
image it throws the error "The command line argument is not valid. Verify
the switch you are using." This tells me that the update has changed some of
the command line switch values - is this a "security fix" gone wrong, or am I
just overlooking something simple?

Have you asked Brother, since it's their software/hardware trying to pull up
Outlook?

Don't bother - Brother will just refer you to Microsoft. I'm trying to get
their advanced guys to at least tell me what the switch is.

Their software guys told me today that they're going to release a patch to
correct this.

That's BS... I just called Brother's Tech Support. The rep had never
heard of that issue before and pretended to do some research. His
advice: please ask elsewhere!

I have a Brother MFC 7820N and it was a breeze to scan something: it
appeared immediately as an attachment (always with the same name and
number, unfortunately) as an (Outlook 2003) email. Immediately after I
did the SP3 upgrade, the error message appeared. The only way to
resolve this is to insist that Brother contacts Microsoft... Good luck
with that!

It is not Microsoft's job to make sure that every application in the world
that uses their software works when an upgrade happens, it is up to the
application developers to test their applications against beta versions of
service packs and new versions to ensure that their software continues to
work.

If I had a tech support professional tell me to ask elsewhere for help with
*their* product, I'd ask to speak to a supervisor on the spot.

Well, F.H. I am a very patient and persistent guy, but I am not going
to embark on a quixotic battle with Brother and/or Microsoft. That is
clearly not my responsibility. But what can you expect from a Brother
supervisor? To find out, here is the verbatim email exchange with such
a person. I'll let you be the judge and make no further comments.
However, as far as I am concerned, this is the very last time I buy
anything from these people... (like they would care!)

You are the ones who should take action, but you
don't seem to care... That issue is all over the Internet forums, but
your personnel has no idea. You are not looking very good...
Before I did the Microsoft update (SP3) I was able to
scan and email directlly to my email. Not anymore. I get a message
from
Outlook: The command line argument is not valid. Verify the switch
you
are using. I have verified and it has not changed. I called your
service
rep who feigned surprise and pretended to investigate. Eventually he
told me to contact Microsoft.

Oh, and by the way... To contact Brother, you have to run through
several hoops and fill a large questionnaire online. However, if you
want to contact directly the supervisor who "addressed" the issue, you
may reach him at SWSUP (at sign) BROTHER.COM
