I'm using Outlook 2002 and want to eliminate use of old DLs. Instead I want
to use one contacts folder with categories. Is there a way to transfer the
data in my DLs (name and email address) to my contacts folder? I'd rather
not have to manually type all this info into contacts again! Ultimately I
want to be able to add more detailed contact information, beyond just the
email addresses (i.e. snailmail address, phone number, etc.)

Thanks for your help.

Open your DL and click File>Save As. Change the "Save as type" to "Text
only". GIve it a new name or accept the default, which will be the DL name.
Click OK. This will save the DL as a Tab-Separated Values (TSV) file. Open
this file in Excel and save it again as a COmma-Separated Values file (CVS).
In Outlook click File>Import and Export>Import from another program or
file., Choose "Comma Separated Values (Windows), Click Next. Browse to the
CSV file you just saved, select it, and click OK. Select the duplicate
handling you want and click Next. Select the Contacts folder where you want
the contacts to be and click Next. Check the box next to "Import
'yourfilename.csv' into folder : yourcontactsfolder. Click "Map Custome
Fields". Click and drag the name you see in the left "From" pane to the
"Name" field in the "To" pane on the right. Click and drag the address you
see in the From pane to the "E-mail" field in the "To" pane (you'll have to
scroll the To pane down to see it). Click OK, then Finish.
