Now that the ink handling in OneNote architecture has been upgraded
(per Chris Pratley's blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/chris_pratley/ ) --
will OneNote be able to recognize Logitech's io pen's input as text
instead of an image?

Anyone know?

And/or anyone know (or ballpark) the access to the OneNote 12 beta to a
broader group of people? I've signed up to be notified, but haven't
heard anything. Thanks.

ps yes, I searched the archive and found some topics on OneNote and the
io pen, but now with the changes to OneNote's ink handling, I think
things have changed.

It already can. FAQ 5.05.

As to whether that will be improved in OneNote 2007 I don't know for sure,
but I doubt it. Input devices are up to Windows, not OneNote.

Thanks for the post, but even your FAQ says it sees it as an image, not
text. (So your sentence, "It already can" is confusing. My original
question was asking if OneNote's new ink-handling capabilities could
recognize the io pen's input as text.

Ok, we'll just assume for the moment that nothing changes and that the
import from the Logitech software still comes in as an image, OneNote
12 will still OCR it automatically, so at least it'll be searchable.
So that's something. But not coming in as text will dramatically
reduce its usefulness.

I hope someone in the beta group is giving this a shot. I know their
NDA wouldn't cover posting here about it, but it'd be a great topic for
a future blog post from those in the know (hint, hint). :)

My mistake, I forgot that it only sees that as an image and not text when
you send it to OneNote.

Actually that will be a little hit or miss -- depends upon how clean your
handwriting is. Generally speaking I wouldn't count on being able to
accurately and consistently OCR handwritten text. If you have exceptionally
clear printing you might get better results.

Ultimately I think you need to address this to the OS group -- the digital
ink capture is still done at the OS level. If the Tablet PC can capture and
recognize the ink then OneNote can too.

It's actually a question for Logitech. They have all they need with Onenote
2007 to push ink into Onenote and have Onenote reco it (if you have a tablet
PC or one of the nicer editions of Vista that includes tablet fucntionality)

Thanks guys -- I appreciate the clarification. If Logitech updates
their software for OneNote 2007 to send over ink as text, that may be
the last feature needed to get me to convert to a tablet! I've been
holding off on buying a new laptop for a year or so now -- looks like
I'll wait a little longer to see what happens!

Ah, come on over! The experience on a Tablet PC is excellent. If you're of
a mind to check things out, take a look at Tablet PC MVP Terri Stratton's
web site, where she has loads of information (and comparison charts) on
Tablet PCs: http://thetabletpc.net .
