Hello everyone,

let me express that I ma very disappointed to see old WordArt graphics in
Word 2007 Beta 2. How odd to have new WordArt engine in Excel and Powerpoint
while being stuck with old engine in Word. It just dos not make any sense to
me. I am a Word power user, preparing a lot of leaflets, documents and
brochures every week. I have also produced 3 full books in Word and 5 more
are in the works. Where other people are using InDesign and Quark, I had
stayed with Word, pushing it to it’s limits. I was so excited to learn about
new WordArt when the first details were published. I plea that Microsoft
would make a change before final release of Word 2007. The new WortArt engine
is by all means great and cool. Anyone willing to comment?

Best regards,
Jan Sichula (Slovak Republic)

Hi Jan,

The issue is actually much bigger than you are pointing out (and it
won't change as this is a huge development job).
Office 2007 comes with a new drawing engine that is used for charts,
shapes, pictures, clip arts, SmartArts and WordArt. That new engine was
fully implemented by Excel and PPT. Word however only implements it
half-way. So in Word, you have the old and new drawing engines existing
at the same time. For some things you do, the new drawing engine is
used. For others, the old is.
For example, if you insert a shape in Word, the old drawing engine is
used. If you insert a clipart, the new drawing engine is used. For some
pictures you insert, the new one is used, for others, the old one.
Depending on which engine is used, the contextual tabs will look
different (so there are for example two different Picture tools tabs).
WordArt is done with the old engine. You can tell whether you are
working with the new or old engine, when you right-click on an object
and choose the "Format ..." option. If you see a modal dialog that you
know from Word 2003 (the telltale is that it has tabs on top, and that
it has OK and Cancel buttons), then it is using the old engine. If you
see a non-modal dialog (tabs on the left, only a Close button, you can
work with the document while the dialog is open), then it is the new
engine.
The decision to implement it this way is final for Word 2007. It was a
tough one for the team, but they just didn't have the resources to
implement the full new engine and still implement all the other things
they wanted to do for 2007.
It is odd that Word got stuck with the old WordArt, whereas PPT and
Excel have the new one. Maybe they'll come up with a different name for
the new one by RTM.
Please use the send-a-smile tool to tell Microsoft about your
disappointment with WordArt in Word, so that they know that this is
something important to do for the version after 2007.

is there any way to specifically force Word to use the OLD engine
instead of the new one for pictures/images?? any pictures i insert
into a table use the new engine, and when they print, it chops of the
top and left side of the picture. BUT it doesn't do this to any
pictures that are in the table cells that use the OLD engine. (also,
it doesn't seem to do this to the pictures that are not in a table cell
and use the new engine. odd again.)

so instead of waiting for a fix is there anyway to force it to use the
old engine? i am not doing any fancy 3d stuff or need to rotate the
pictures or anything, and the old engine is perfectly suitable for what
i need to do with my documents.

thanks

Are you using the crop feature? I know that it is broken in PPT 2007, so
it might have issues in Word as well.
I have no idea whether you can force the old engine or not.

no, i don't crop the picture or anything. just insert->picture, browse
for it and insert. it looks fine in the document, but doesn't print
correctly. i have tried different printers and drivers as well, pcl
and postscript. and it is only the pictures, in a table cell, that use
the new engine. everything else prints fine.

i have been digging around the registry for a setting that would
specify to use the old engine, but so far have nothing. let me know if
you find anything.

thanks

There are some printing issues in Word 2007. You could try to set your
print output settings (esp. print quality) as default before opening
Word and then using the print immediately function (it's the printer
icon with the flash on the QAT). That might help.

no luck. there has to be something somewhere that tells word which
engine to use! rrrrrrrrrr.

Doubt that users have any control over it. I think you'll have to live
with this issue until the next beta.
