You have to delete the shortcut off the desktop. In Windows Messenger go to
Tools >> Options in the Preferences tab uncheck the first two check boxes
that say "Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts" and "Allow Windows
Messenger to run in the background".

They are both already unchecked. I can't find it anywhere under add/remove
programs also. It sits in the systray unless I double click on it. It won't
let me exit
it out of the systray if Outlook is open.
Thanx again.

That doesn't work .... even with those unchecked in Windows Messenger, it
loads itself when MSN Messenger is started. Jonathan Kay had a solution I
used which worked .... forgot what it was though :-) .... Jonathan?? ;-)

To disable Windows Messenger, you can use this tool:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/MessengerDisable.zip

Otherwise you can follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089/en-us

Bye and Happy New Year! :-)

Easiest way is just to remove it.

To do so, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the
notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run
and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

You can always reinstall it if you need it (for Remote Assistance in MSN Messenger for
instance).

Generally disabling Windows Messenger is not a good idea since some things
depend on it. So please follow the following directions to disable Windows
Messenger from starting up when Outlook or Outlook Express opens.

Outlook Express
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab.
2. Click to clear the Automatically log on to Windows Messenger check box,
and then click OK.

Outlook 2002
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
2. Click to clear the Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook check
box, and then click OK.

I personally don't like to uninstall Windows Messenger since so many things
depend on it, for example Remote Assistance as Jonathan Kay said.

Without uninstalling, Windows Messenger can be disabled using the tool
or using the method described in the KB302089 article "Windows Messenger
4.5 or later versions on a Windows XP Home Edition-based computer or on
a Windows XP Professional-based computer".

But moreover, to prevent a slow execution of Outlook Express, I suggest
to hide Windows Messenger from OE using the tool or following these
instructions:
http://www.tweakxp.com/article37202.aspx

Bye :)

Hi,

It's not worth it, because disabling it is harder to fix than reinstalling it.

So is it better to uninstall it not to disable it?

In my opinion, yes. After having to deal with thousands of "why doesn't this work?" after
they've reinstalled Windows Messenger a billion times, it would've just been simpler to just
uninstall it.

OK :-)
When Windows Messenger is uninstalled, I noticed that MSN Messenger must
be reinstalled to work fine.
Maybe it's better to add the "Hide Messenger" value in the registry for
OE, too.

I see a lot of people having problems with disabling Windows Messenger . I
simply used my firewall to "block"it; it works.
