I have created a few mail folders for different newsgroups and I just drag
any downloaded messages I want to keep. Then (fairly regularly) delete the
rest.

Hi (or is it Bon jour) tintin,

Queries concerning Outlook Express 5 are best posted to the Outlook Express
newsgroup - try

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outloo
kexpress

Questions about system performance are best directed to either:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.win95.general.discussion

OR

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion

If your problems are unresolved.

To obtain 100 headers select Tools, Get next 100 Headers. I suspect you are
selecting one of the Synchronize options and this will work to different
rules as you have discovered.

You can't delete individual newsgroup messages (email messages can be
deleted by clicking on the message and selecting Edit, Delete). In the Help
search file select Ignore a conversation. This may contain a workaround for
you. Can't say more as I haven't used "Ignore".

Saving messages is another topic. You should create separate news folders
within the Local Folders. Click on Local Folders and select File, Folder,
New and follow the instructions. To copy a newsgroup message (or
conversation) single click on the message, select Edit, Copy to Folder,
click the News folder you want and click on OK.

You mention cleaning up. The general advice in the OE5 newsgroup is not to
check the box in Tools, Options, Maintenance for "Compact messages in the
background". This option is suspected of corrupting files and causing system
failures. The advice is to manually select compacting and to do it
regularly. Note if you do it from File, Folder, Compact (or Compact all
Folders) you can compact the Inbox and Sent Items. These are not included if
you use Tools, Options, Maintenance, Clean up. The advantage with the latter
is that you can see how wasted space there is currently is (except that that
for the Inbox and Sent Items is not separately disclosed).

HTH (Hope this helps)

Gerry
