I've seen message after message asking when the next release of IE4 is
coming out.

Even Microsoft doesn't know. How do I know that? Well, two reasons:

1) A friend of mine is on the build team.
2) It's software stupid!!

OK, as to my friend, I posted several messages that said that the "rumored"
June 11 date was incorrect. Yet you guys didn't believe me and now you are
crying that Microsoft didn't meet this "rumored" date.

Until Microsoft comes here and posts an answer you CAN NOT assume that
anything you hear out in the "forest" is correct.

Can I say that again? Wait for Microsoft to say something officially,
either here or at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/

My friend says they are working on the next version and it'll ship when
it's ready. PERIOD.

Repeat that again. When it's ready. There is NO OFFICIAL timeschedule for
release. It's gonna be in your hot little hands WHEN IT IS READY.

Now, let's get onto the "it's software stupid." Doing good software is NOT
like building a road. It is like painting a great piece of art. Do you
think Picasso had people standing over him saying "his next piece will be
delivered on June 11?" I think not.

Creating software is the most complex of human endeavors. If you've never
done it, you wouldn't understand. It's complex. IE4 is millions of lines of
code. If ONE of those lines has something incorrect, it'll seriously crash
your computer. Or worse (read the "Serious Netscape Security Bug" message
for an example).

Microsoft's engineers are JUST as ancy about getting a new version in your
hands as you are to get it.

For the record, I want it just as much as you all do. Let's wait, give
Microsoft a chance. I want art, not a Netscape copycat, OK?

Chris,

I have a way of sticking my foot in my mouth.

<grin>

I've gotta find a better example. I didn't realize that flattening earth,
dumping on some gravel, dumping on asphalt and rolling it was such a
complex thing. I watched them build the street in front of my house and it
certainly didn't look as complex as IE4 to me.

OK, here's something I know about (I was a magazine editor). Writing
software is NOT like publishing a magazine. <g>

My opinions only.

No, but it IS a lot like *writing* for publication, which I've done.
It's MUCH harder than editing. Editors only "give" criticism; writers
have to "take" it and be willing to come back for more. <g>

If you want to do *anything* correctly, you gotta' put a lot of effort
into it:

a) Inspiration;
b) Planning;
c) Execution.

(Strike TWO! Would you care to try for three? :)

I'm writing a book on NetMeeting currently. Believe me, writing software
is harder. And much more difficult to make a certain deadline on.

I've done a lot of writing too. I should have mentioned that.
