Hello

I was just working in MS Excel 2003. I opened the sheet to discuss over a
telephone call and made a number of alterations during the conversation.

When I went to save the sheet I was working on, a dialog box came up saying
that the sheet could not be saved due to a sharing violation (I am the only
user of this machine). I cancelled the dialog box and tried to save again -
this time a slightly different dialog box popped up saying that the sheet
could not be saved due to a sharing violation and it had been renamed with a
six-digit numerical name - the details of which I cannot remember. I was
told to shut the sheet and reopen it to save as a new name.

I did as I was told and shut Excel down. I reopened Excel and went to the
File.. menu to open the newly named file but it wasn;t on the list of recent
files. I cannot find it and really need the work. I have looked in the temp
directory and in "My Documents".

Where do I look for this file? Alternatively, does anyone know how the
naming convention worked so I can search for it.

I have lost a few hours work.

For the sake of google.

a) The numerically named file was found in the same subfolder as the
originally opened spreadsheet.

b) A tool that allows regular safety backups of files while working on them
(NB: NOT "autosave" within Excel since that over-writes your original file)
is called AutoSafe and is available from
http://www.oaltd.co.uk/MVP/Default.htm

Hope this helps someone else.

I have the same problem and haven't seem to found a fix yet. My users lost
their temporary file when they quit, but lucky the server had undelete
program.

If your problem is anything like mine, it may reoccure on the same file.
Does ANYONE have a FIX!?!?!?!!

Is the problem being caused by an anti-virus Office plugin? Enabling
those things can cause a lot of unnecessary grief.

all the computers have trendmicro Officescan Client. i'm fairly certain that
officescan doesn't have an office plug-in.

Is something they call "Outbreak prevention" enabled? It does
interesting things to the folder permissions.

Outbreak Prevention is enabled manually whenever you need it, as far as i'm
aware. I've never run it on the network before, nor seen it popup during
normal operation. i don't think its that.

Thanks for your suggestions so far. Any other suggestions are greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

Where is/was the file. If it was perhaps opened through an e-mail, then
it parks the temporary copy in a temporary, hidden folder in Documents
and settings, user name. Of course when the temp folder gets
cleared/deleted all evidence of the file disappears. Other times I have
seen the computer in question lose contact with the server while the
file was open and then when they close all changes get lost.

The file is located on the a file server on the network. Happens to both
desktops & laptops in the office with Office 2003 SP2 & windows XP SP2.
Nothing in the event logs about losing connection or deleting files for both
the PC & the server

Read through this article and see if it makes sense.

Hi Bob,

The problems described in that article are a little different and all
machines have SP2 as well.

The problem is exactly described in this article.

If the articles suggested fix doesn't work, I'm fresh out of ideas.
