A more informal definition is Test case is a set of questions (hard and soft) being asked to a software system. Based on the answers we receive from the system (deviation from expected, a crash, an usual behavior including errors exposing system internals which make it vulnerable for attacks) we can determine which process of SDLC needs attention and how we can improve the associated phase in test design. the overall motive of  a test case is to minimize the risk associated with testable requirement.
