Label placement rewrite

Hi ! 

I was just wondering if the label placement algorithm was actively being worked on? Can we expect better labels in the rewrite branch anytime soon ?

Do you guys need help for this ? What approaches / algorithms / techniques will you take in the rewriting of the labels part ?

Nope, reimplementing the label placement has not even been started. The
0.4.0 version will come with the samy (crappy) implementation and thus
the same labeling bugs as in release 0.3.1.

Any chance I could try and give stab at it? 

Where should I start ? 

I've been reading a couple of papers on the subject of label placement that were targeted at mapnik. 

Maybe we could take a similar approach ? 

I think mapnik does pretty good job at label placement now.  no ?
