Would I be right in thinking that it is no longer possible to download
prices using ledger?

I tried both
ledger -Q
and
ledger --download
but neither seemed to work.

On the plus side, I've managed to get ledger to compile on OS X :)

It just hasn't been implemented yet for 3.0. It's coming. ;)

I had a look around the code, and I saw a file relating to executing
getquote. Is it your intention to stick with getquote, or build the
functionality in to ledger? The reason I ask is that I think I'd
prefer you to stick with the 'getquote' method, as it gives me
flexibility to tinker.

I'll stick with getquote.

Hey presumably this is implemented by now? I've tried and failed to get it to work - I'm using 3.0.0-20130529.

I created a script called 'getquote' in the working directory and used the --download option. No joy!
