dev=tikz doesn't work

knitr (v 0.3) work perfectly for me when I use dev=pdf, but when I modify it to dev=tikz I get the following error, once for each figure:

Error : failed to compile <fig_file>.tikz to PDF

I updated the tikzDevice package and knitr to the latest versions, and I believe I have a recent tikz/pgf installation. 

Any ideas on how I can debug this?

You can open that <fig_file>.tikz and see if you can find anything suspicious.

Or try to compile it to PDF directly by

pdflatex filename.tikz

and see filename.log if there are LaTeX errors.

Yet another thing to mention is be aware of special characters in your
plot, and you might need sanitize=TRUE.

Yes that is the correct fix, but I need to dig further into this issue
to see why tikzDevice chose latex instead of pdflatex; the latter
should be expected.

Hi,

after installing R 3.0 my old tikzDevice installation was removed. It looks like the package was removed from CRAN. I really like the functionality I get with combining tikzDevice and knitr (see below for a relevant thread). 

Any idea how I can get such functionality without tikzDevice? Or perhaps I can somehow force R 3.0 to accept the old/removed tikzDevice package?

I managed to install an old version of the tikzDevice package form a local directory. 

However, since the package is no longer supported, do you have any suggestions for a replacement package that is currently supported or under development (I want to to have mathematical Latex equations embedded in labels of plots in pdf documents produced by knitr)?

I have emailed the author several times since last year. I just
emailed him again to see if he allows other people to take over it,
since I'm not optimistic about its return any more.

I checked out the development version from Github and I can still
install it under R 3.0.

Hi Yihui,

Could you post a few lines about how you installed the Github version successfully under R 3.0. I've tried using the command from the README.md  install.packages("tikzDevice", repos="http://R-forge.R-project.org") but I just got the message

"Warning: unable to access index for repository http://R-forge.R-project.org/bin/macosx/contrib/3.0

   package ‘tikzDevice’ is available as a source package but not as a binary

Warning message:

package ‘tikzDevice’ is not available (for R version 3.0.0)"

I also tried using Hadley's devtools install_github("RTikZDevice", username="Sharpie") but that also failed citing that 

"ERROR: a 'NAMESPACE' file is required"

Turns out all I was missing was a type="source". The command:

install.packages("tikzDevice", repos="http://R-forge.R-project.org", type="source")

should work fine.

bring it back to CRAN in the near future.
