Hello - our group is serving KMZ files for download. Fate upgrading to
GE 5.0, some users have been getting download errors, in Firefox the
error is "somefile.kml cannot be opened, because an unknown error
occurred." I installed GE 5.0 and immediately got the same error when
trying to download KMZ files.

I saw these threads
http://groups.google.com/group/kml-support-getting-started/browse_thread/thread/ead5ac6b8e81b68a/7ad4ca8a22f7724c?lnk=gst&q=could+not+be+opened+because+an+unknown+error+#7ad4ca8a22f7724c

and

and fixed the problem using this solution:
"Looking at the key for .kmz in the registry - once again a value
called "Application" is present and set to "googleearth.exe". Delete
this and it all works again. "

Is that really the ONLY way to fix this? Expecting average users to
hack the registry is to me asking a lot. Is there a simpler way to fix
this?

Thanks!

Hi Todd,

Have you tried reinstalling Earth 5? Also try this:

1. Open My Computer
2. Go to Tools > Folder Options in the menu.
3. Click to 'File Types'
4. Scroll down to KML and KMZ
5. If "Opens With" is not "Google Earth" for both of these, use the
Change... button to make sure that Google Earth is associated with
those file types.

Also, please use the Google Earth Help Center at:

http://earth.google.com/support/

for installation and file association problems in the future.

Thanks,
- Roman
