I'm creating placemarks containing graphics only. Can I remove the "Direction To here - From here" that appear in placemarks. If so can someone provide an example of KML code that removes this feature of placemarks?

Thanks!

Chris

Hello,

Yes you can use the <BalloonStyle> tag to do this.

Have a look at the KML documenation for more info but I've attached a crude example to this post; save it somewhere and view it with a text editor.

Simon, thanks for the speedy assistance! The Balloon tag is the solution. Now I have a secondary problem: I need to have the image inbedded in the saved kmx file. I can do this with the <description> tag but not with the <balloon> tag. Am I missing something? The graphic is not located on a server and therefore needs to be included in the final kmx file. Thanks for any further help you can provide.

Hello,

Yes, that's possible too.

You can keep the <Description> and embed it into the <text> in the <Balloonstyle>.

I've attached another example to this post. I opened it up with the client (as KML), saved as KMZ, removed the image and opened the new KMZ file and the image was still rendered in the balloon (as you say, zipped up into the KMZ file).

Simon, again thanks for the quick and correct response! Two more questions - not code related: Can you recommend a good KML Editor, and what is a good online resource for KML documentation?
Thank you!

Hello,

No problem, looks like I always log on just after you!

Have a look at the following thread for KML documentation (actually it's a sticky one at the top of the forum board):
http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/366549

As for a KML editor, the GE client itself is the best place to start! Have a play with different options in the client then save what you're doing as KML and have a look at the code behind it.

Of course, there are lots of things that you can't do with the client where the KML reference documentation and this forum will come in useful.

TextPad has been mentioned; it's a good all round editor. This recent thread talks about a few ideas:
http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/516329

Personally, I just use notepad.exe

(Remeber to format the text/set encoding as UTF-8 by the way.)

Have fun!

Simon.

A quick and dirty way to do this is to type:

<font color="white">

under the image html in the placemark description space. The line will still be there, but will not be visible.

Simon, I'm back. Now I am trying to code a Balloon placemark that is tethered. And, of course, I am having difficulty modifying the GE placemark sample (that has the "to-from" text). So, is there such a thing as a tethered Balloon placemark? And if so can you provide an example?
Many thanks!

Ooh, not something I've looked at in detail... anyone else?

(Sorry!)

Simon.
