Hi everyone,

I'm running on fumes tonight, but this update is important:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

I have formally confirmed a reservation for KinkForAll San Francisco at the Women's Building on Sunday, March 21 from 10 AM to 5 PM for 3 rooms. I've received an estimate (attached to this email) and am charged with paying a total cost of $900 in full by March 12th. Thankfully, I can front the total cost of the event, but my personal finances are NOT equipped to deal with a $900 hit this month. Please consider donating, and spreading the word about our need for funds. You can donate on the KFASF page at

http://tr.im/kfasf

NOW IS THE TIME TO SPREAD THE WORD. Please consider copy-and-pasting the text "e-flyer" at the end of this message on your blog, mailing lists, and any other channels you have available to you. Thank you.

DETAILS:

Today, in between tweeting at Sex::Tech 2010,[0] I completed the paperwork for the KinkForAll San Francisco reservation on March 21st at the Women's Building. The bookings coordinator was able to work with me via email throughout the day, and now we have a formal reservation, with official estimate (attached). The total cost is $900. This needs to be paid in full by March 12 (yes, the 12, not the 21st). I can front the costs but I really need help with paying the rest of the balance!

Please consider making a donation to make KFASF a reality; there's a donation button at

http://kinkforall.pbworks.com/KinkForAllSanFrancisco#Donate

Also, tell others about it, and urge them to donate. They'll be helping fund this event and bringing KinkForAll's incredibly empowering potential across the country!

Another option to help with funding is looking for sponsorships. I'm going to start reaching out to local businesses and other groups that might consider sponsoring this, but I would love your suggestions. Please send links to groups you think would be interested in sponsorship, or, even better, the contact information of individuals within those organizations (privately if necessary).

Since we now have a confirmed venue, the time to start spreading the word is TODAY. I've repurposed the flyer from prior KinkForAll events with slight modifications and it is at the end of this message. Please copy-and-paste it everywhere you can think of!

I've already sent it, or a shorter version of it, to the following people:

* Carol Queen at the CSC[1] (who's already responded and told me that KFASF will be in the next CSC newsletter! Yay!)
* Deb Levine at ISIS[2]
* Jessica Fields at SFSU[3]
* Jessica O'Reilly who writes for Carnal Nation and previously wrote an article about KinkForAll Providence[4]
* The Noisebridge mailing list.[5]

Sarah Dopp also mentioned KinkForAll San Francisco at her Queer Open Mic event earlier tonight.[6] (Thank you, Sarah!)

So the word is already being spread, but we need more—a LOT more—due to the short window of promotion that we have available this time. Where else can we spread the word? Please reply with all your suggestions or, even better, just tell your friends and promote KFASF yourself. (Frankly, I'm a little busy with other things, too….)

The good news is that the Women's Building venue provides just about everything we might want; they have free Wi-Fi, plenty of electrical outlets, even some whiteboards in our rooms for our use! We still want to make sure we have nametags, possibly a digital projector, and various other goodies like coffee and foods. I've noted some of these needs on the "Needs list" for the KFASF page.[7] If you intend to bring an item with you to KinkForAll San Francisco, please note that item on the Inventory page[8] and remove it from the Needs list if it's there.

STILL LEFT TO DO:

* Create SF-specific physical tear-off flyer, cover San Francisco in said awesome flyers. Potential places to flyer:
** MAGNET[9]
** Wicked Grounds café[10]
** …where else?
* Post event details at additional social network sites
** Upcoming.org
** Twtvite.com
** Fetlife.com
** …where else?
* BLOG about this
* Invite everyone I can to the Facebook event for KFASF[11]
* RAISE MONEY.
* Tweet about all this like a bat out of hell. :)

Okay, I think that's everything for today. Phew!

Thank you so much for helping out and being a part of making this happen.

Cheers,
-maymay

Details
=======

KinkForAll is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people of all persuasions to share and learn in an open environment. It is a fast-paced event with discussions, presentations, and interaction from all participants. (It is inspired by the BarCamp community.)

ANYONE WITH SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE OR WITH THE DESIRE TO LEARN IS WELCOME AND INVITED TO JOIN. When you attend, be prepared to share with others. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

A KinkForAll is a special kind of gathering because there are no spectators, only participants. Attendees must give a talk or a presentation, help with one, or otherwise contribute in some way to support the event. (There are many ways to participate; don't feel pressured to give a presentation!) All presentations are scheduled the day they happen—there are no pre-scheduled presentations or keynote addresses. The people who participate in the event will select the presentations they want to see.

Anyone can lead a session, on any topic related to sexuality. You do not necessarily have to teach a new skill or idea. You might share an experience, facilitate a discussion, or read a poem. The goal is to start a conversation, make connections (maybe even friends), and exchange knowledge. Presentations promoting specific commercial products or companies are discouraged.

Hi everyone. Just a brief update on KinkForAll San Francisco:

TASKS STILL LEFT TO DO:

* Create a tear-off flyer for KFASF and flyer it in local
neighborhoods.
* Finish raising money. We are still about $350 short. Must. Tweet.
More.
* Blog about the event.
* Reach out to additional community outlets. Any suggestions of who?
* Write a formal-looking Press Release and then send it to local
media, since they like those things. Which media:
** SFGate.com
** …who else?

So who can help me do any of this? Do any of you have local SF
contacts in community, media, or professional circles that would be
interested in participating in KinkForAll San Francisco and being a
part of a conversation about sexuality? Let me know!

Maria, I know you're local to SF and signed up for KFASF on the
wiki. :) If I can make a tear-off flyer tomorrow, can you print some
out and start putting them up in your neighborhood?

STUFF I'VE DONE:

* Sent an email to everyone who had already signed up for KFASF on the
wiki page before we had a venue and a date, letting them know about
the venue confirmation. (If you haven't signed up yet but want to
come, you should sign up now!)
* Sent email to my personal contacts located in SF about KFASF who had
not signed up yet. Hopefully this should begin making word-of-mouth
circulation.
* Invited everyone on my Facebook friends list who is in San Francisco
and has an open mind to the Facebook event. There are now a few
additional RSVPs.
* Added a listing for KinkForAll San Francisco on TwtVite.com,
Upcoming.org, Craigslist.org, and EventGuide.com (some of these are
not yet live as submissions are reviewed by humans). See the full list
of live event pages on the KFASF wiki page.[0]
* Scheduled a post to appear on SexGenderBody.com (in approximately 7
hours from now, i.e., early Monday morning local time) about
KinkForAll San Francisco.
* Got invited to appear on FCCFreeRadio.com, a local radio station,
for an interview about KinkForAll San Francisco on March 7 at 12:00
noon PST. (You can listen live online.)

Aaaannnd once again I'm utterly exhausted tonight. I'll do more
tomorrow.

Great to see that it's all starting to come together!

But the bad news: I have a commitment I can't break from March 18-
March 23. :( Unfortunately I'm way behind in reading posts and didn't
have the chance to respond to the thread re: possible dates.

I was hoping to use the KFASF Twitter we set up to Tweet from the
unconference... maybe someone still wants to do that.

I can't really commit to getting flyers up because I am spending most
of my time at work these days and time outside of work is very
limited. Online stuff will be a lot easier for me to accomplish. I'll
still do what I can to spread the word and I'll get all my ideas &
things I can do/have done on to the to-do list page. And I'll keep
folks updated here.

Oh noes! :( I'm sorry to hear you can't make it that weekend.

I've been tweeting *about* KinkForAll San Francisco from my personal twitter stream and also every now-and-again from the "global" KinkForAll one. I imagine that it'd be easier for people to simply tweet using their personal accounts from the unconference itself, too.

Also, since this is still the first one, there isn't a huge wellspring of people who know about it yet. Maybe the SF-specific Twitter will come in handier for KinkForAll San Francisco 2, when it happens. :) Cuz it will.

I totally understand. I'll try to cover my neighborhood (Nob Hill-ish) with flyers, but I can also make some special trips to other places in the city. Obviously the Mission and Castro is going to be a high priority, since that's where the Women's Building is. But I think that if there's anyone on this list in Oakland, that'd be a great place to flyer as well so we can try to get a much more diverse crowd at the event itself.

We also still need to *make* that flyer. I can modify the one we already have, but if any of you have graphic design talent and you'd like to contribute, this is a great opportunity to pitch in and make something perty!

Another mini SF venue update:

Attached is the invoice I received from the Women's Building venue. The Bookings Coordinator was kind enough to reduce the garbage fee and remove the $80 cleaning fee from the charge on my good faith word that we'll respect the venue. I'm sure we will. If we don't, I'll get charged the cleaning fee after all.

I've written a cheque in the amount of $795.00 and I'll be mailing this to the Women's Building tomorrow. I've updated the financials spreadsheet to reflect these changes.

These changes mean that I'm covering only $115 extra dollars (on top of the $300 I've donated myself) to the venue costs. It'd be wonderful to spread the word about donations so that I might get some contributions towards this outstanding balance.
