Dear all,

the JetDroid project has made some good progress in the past. In order to ensure we can continue at this pace and make good progress in the future I am now asking you for help. What is needed is some missing information about the Jet hardware. Knowledge of this is essential for further development and driver support for all parts of the phone hardware. Without this information support for some parts of the hardware cannot be developed (at a reasonable effort)

How can you help?
If you know someone who has access to Samsung schematic diagrams please ask if you can get the missing information or take a photo of parts of the schematics. I know that it is most probably impossible to get a copy (e.g. PDF) of the schematics, thus I am just asking for some information. So, if you best friend is working in a phone repair shop and he or she as access to this kind of information, please ask this person.

What is needed?
To fully understand the phone hardware we need to know to which port e.g. of the main phone processor the peripheral chips (e.g. WLAN, bluetooth, modem, sensors, etc.) connect to. All pins/ports of the processor have names and we know them. What we need to know is to which signal (names) these pins connect to. In some cases the connection to the main processor (S3C6410) is known but it is not known where the other end is connected to.

How to provide this information?
Below I have compiled 4 lists. List A lists pin names of the phones main processor S3C6410 (in the schematic diagrams it is referenced as UPC701). If you can help please provide connections like e.g. XM0ADDR12 -> LCD_SCLK (which means pin XM0ADDR12 connects to signal LCD_SCLK). Completing this list is of highest performance
List B list signals of which the name is known but it is not known where on UPC701 they connect to. Please provide connection information like for pin A. All signals on this list should connect (at least) to one pin from list A
List C lists signals of which the name is know as well as the connection to UPC701. For these signals the other end of the connection is needed. Please specify connects like BT_HOST_WAKE -> U201 (BT_GPIO_1) which means signal BT_HOST_WAKE connects to pin BT_GPIO_1 of U201. For this list only connections to components other than UPC701 are needed.
List D lists signals of which the name is know but it is not know where they connects. For these signals information like for list C are need but the do not necessarily connect to the main processor UPC701

Too complicated?
If you have access to the required information but don't know how to read the schematic diagrams, please search for as many of the names below and shoot photos for the different sections of the schematic diagram and mail them to me.

I hope you can help to resolve the missing connections.

Cheers,

Dopi

Below are the 4 lists mention above. The number of open pins / signals can give you an impression of the amount of information that is need for successful continuation of the JetDroid project.

Hi Rajiv,

thanks for your contribution. However this information does not help. It only contains schematics of some S3C6410 development boards. We need information from the actual schematics of the phone.

Hi Dopi,

why are we not officially asking samsung for help on specs?

it is (or should! be) in their interest to keep people happy who buyed
a jet with big expectations and a shitty software. on the road they
did now fix the software a bit and sell it as bada (see wave s8500),
but no help for the first generation of amoled-jet users.

thanks for your help. I have the service manual already. Good luck with your repair-shop. I would expect them to offer you a some kind of paid subscription.

Hi Damir,

sorry, I think asking Samsung will not work.

Firstly because the regard the schematics as confidential information. ( They seem to spend some effort to only supply them to a few people in encrypted form ).

Secondly, what interest would they have to make people happy with a phone that they started selling one year ago? They want people to by a new phone if they are not happy with the current one. This is a very common business perspective ...

please don't ask Samsung for this information. I don't want to draw too much of their attention to this project. They won't give us the information, anyway.

Ok it's what we need
Depending on the type of product, it includes schematic and block
diagrams, printed wiring boards, waveforms, parameters and IC pin
descriptions, parts list, drawings and schematics of mechanisms.
Please note that a service manual includes schematics, unless the
product description mentions the opposite. Also please note that in
some cases we also offer just the schematics as a separate product at
a lower price, but that doesn't mean the service manual doesn't
include them.

But it costs 19.5 USD :'(

Cheers

Just wait one second. We need to first claify if it contains more schametics than in the troubleshooting section of the service manual. I already have this part of the service manual and it contains parts of the schematic but it is not enough.

The sections of the S8000 Service Manual that I have are:

2. Specification
5. Exploded View and Parts List
7. Block Diagrams
8. PCB Diagrams
9. Flow Chart of Troubleshooting
11. Disassembly and Assembly Instructions

Section 9 includes some schematic parts but it is not complete

For the I8000 I know the complete structure:

1. Safety Precautions
2. Specification
3. Product Function
4. Array course control
5. Exploded View and Parts List
6. Main Electrical Parts List
7. Block Diagrams
8. PCB Diagrams
9. Flow Chart of Troubleshooting
10. Reference data
11. Disassembly and Assembly instructions

Thus the complete schematics are not part of the usual service manual.

If the manual that is offered by manualsparadise does not include full schematics it is not worth spending the money ...

I know that e.g. for TV sets you can buy the service manuals with complete schematics but I don't know if this the case for the phones. We need to check this first.

Dopi

The second link you gave has also a lot of manuals. Maybe We can find

Hi,

Shouldn't we start considering to reverse-engineer the Samsung
firmware? We know it's possible and it can deliver results. I'm not
very concerned about any legal issues (as we're just inspecting, not
copying anything). And even if it is an issue, we might find some work-
around. E.g. by just start learning everybody how to disassemble the
Samsung firmware instead of giving everybody the disassembled Samsung
firmware right-away?

Best regards - Thijs

Hi Thijs!

First of all reverse engineering is hard. Next is copyright. Samsung
firmware is covered by their copyright. Due to that almost anything
that deprecated or does not accepted by license is not legal including
copiing, modifiing, disassembling, etc. So pure legal reverse
engineering should look like collecting of information about working
system (for instance (as i understood) Dopi metered voltage while
current os worked to understand correct voltage values).

On other hand it may be possible to dissasemble some parts of code. It
is not pure legal but may be covered by fair use in USA's law (as i
think our hosting is in USA; personally i do not like an idea to be at
law with samsung or somebody else). But even if consider to
disassemble something it is not good to use results straight forward
because new code (newly writed) can still contain copyrighted parts.
To solve this there are two men (or clean room) reverse engineering
when the first man looks original code and write (implementation
independent) documentation and the second man write new code according
to this documentation (without any looks into original code).

Regards,
Aleksey Cherepanov

The Jet would be way cheaper by the time the Jetdroid project is
finished. Of course this is because as time flies, a mobile phone's
price substantially decreases.

When the project is finished, The Jet would be the ideal phone for
majority of the mobile phone market. Software, hardware and price
will
be part of the main contributing factors. And the only thing left to
do would be to spread the good news of the project's conclusion. The
Jet would receive so much demand from the market that it would be a
major factor in the price reduction of most of the other phones that
shall be released in the near future. Or better yet, versions of it
that would cost only a bit more could be produced.

Inevitable effects if project is successful:

Jet will -

1. Force the deflation of other mobile phone prices.
2. Increase the mobile phone standards.
3. Extinct a great number of the other phones.
4. Shake the status quo temporarily.
5. Take a substantial share in the smartphone market.
6. Alleviate unreasonable price inflations on mobile phones.
