Prompted by the email below I was finally able to get my first Crinium Lily, which erupts from the damp forest floor in first showers of the monsoon.

Thanks Kiranji,
I did not know that this lily was called Crinium Lily. In wynad
district of Kerala where we receive spring showers sometimes as early
as February, we get these lilys' much earlier, sometimes in Feb or
March even.
regards
Yazdy.

Great Photos! Then all Crinum are not spider lilies.

 Beautiful!
It compels me to say
'They neither toil,nor spin,yet I tell you,
even Solomon in all his glory was not
arrayed like one of these.'

One point bothers me. It is often called Crinium Lily, and also Crinum
. I think genus name is Crinum (Kry-num), but the common name Crinium.
Can some one clarify?

Sibdas ji, I surfed and searched Crinium ... it appears to be some kind of blunder carried with times ... most of the cases used as a common name ... in rare cases, some nurseries use it erroneously instead of Crinum.
The dictionaries do not have any meaning for it.
Only one instance in medical dictionary: fragilitas crinium ... a brittleness of the hair.

Reminds me of bellirica vs bellerica, read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beleric

Regards.

Hello all
In Greek Crinum refers to Krinon which means Lily---reference A manual
of Plant names by Chicheley Plowden 1968.
