Dear Ms Raghavan, Dr Turaga, Dr Alfred, Mrs Pejaver
Sorry for the long silence. I was away for some time myself from Pune. When I came back, pre-monsoon showers wet many seeds s I had to wait for two-three days of good sunshine to collect seeds.
I have been able to collect small numbers of a variety of seeds but I could not get Dalbergia melanoxylon as the ripe ones had been dashed to the ground.
I am sending Ms Raghavan, Dr Turaga & Dr Alfred packets of the following seeds:
Trees :
- Neem (Azadirachta indica).
- Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo).
- Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana)
- Chandan (Santalum album)
Creepers :
- Gokarn (Clitoria terneata)
- Dutchman's Pipe or Badak-vel (Aristolochia ringens)
These are being sent by registered post to your addresses.
My father-in-law, Mr Nandan Kalbag tells me that the Aristolochia seeds have high failure rates, so I think that you may get about four-five plants max from the seeds I am sending you.
Mrs Pejaver, I have collected a large packet of Chandan seeds. I will now collect Karanj (Pongamia glabra) seeds for you. If the students you mentioned could contact me it would help me get the seeds before Monsoon. For your needs, I am trying to collect Indian species only.
I do hope you enjoy planting the seeds and getting saplings. Growing plants from seeds gives you happiness different from buying from Nurseries but is more challenging. I think these should be able to survive anywhere in the plains of mainland India.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur

One does not often associate James Michener with nature-writing.Yet it is difficult to find one of his epics which has not been embellished by a tale about the land, its formation, the animals, the plants and the people who live amongst them....

I am interested in African Blackwood and Chandan seeds-- if you have any left after the eagar response you have received!
I can give you seeds of Mahogany and Mauve Lagerstroemia speciosa and the Badminton ball tree (Parkia biglandulosa).

PS. I live in a second floor apt but have given saplings to a few friends, a PWD Park maintained by our NGO, Nizhal, and the garden started at Puzhal Jail.
I've just planted three saplings outside my apt block.
