I believe they are unripe fruits of a Sterculia spp.

This site http://keralaforest.gov.in/html/flora/details.htm

lists Sterculia villosa as a species of Kerala Forest.

The foliage of S. villosa is distinctive, and once the tree refoliates it will be much easier to I.D.
