Photograph of the Month

Dear friends 

There are continuous efforts by Garg ji and moderators to see how interactions in the group increase, members maintain a high standard, and valuable information is added to the group database every month. The introduction of practice to honour the highest poster every month separately among moderators and rest of the members,and notifying top posters has definitely increased traffic in the group, and we are likely to achieve the distinction of second highest posts this month.

     We are also planning to nominate photograph of the month, like we have on Flowers of India  website, but I want this with the participation of members. Starting from the 1st of September, members may keep a tag of photograph which looks best to them. They can go on adding more photographs to their list as they are uploaded by members, and at the end of the month pick up one photograph which each member thinks to be the best (by his/her judgement) and communicate it it two or three nominated members, who will compile votes and declare best photograph. We can keep dates 2-4 of next month for sending votes, and 5th for declaring the best photograph, which if possible (Dinesh ji and Garg ji can decide best way) can remain displayed on the website till photograph for next month is decided.

    Let us start this on experimental basis. Two members may volunteer to do the job.

Dear friends

Personal communication with Ushadi has brought up a new idea which should help a lot in members becoming careful while taking and subsequently uploading photographs. We will have two nominations every month:

1. Best photograph uploaded during the month. This photograph, if possible would be displayed on the website for whole next month.

2. Best set of photographs in one post. This would a post in which a member has brought out the best features of the species through photographs,  which can help in identification process.

Members are requested to keep track of these two and send their nomination for both from 1st to 3rd of October (for nominations for September). Members to whom these nominations are to be sent will be communicated shortly.

Yes most identifying features of a tree would be something like this:
I paraphrase from one of the old notes in Herbology class from the
90s.....

* PLANT // TREE TYPE --Deciduous or Conifer? Tree or a shrub? or
is it a climber, small vine or a Liana ???
* LEAF --Leaves are often the easiest way to identify most trees.
Ideally the members will take photos of both the surfaces, and close
up of the back if glands are supposed to be present such in case of
terminalia species...
* BARK -- color, thorns, breaks, patterns , nodules, peeling etc
are often unique to trees...
* Flower-- Front face, side , to show the length of the tume,
petals ad sepals and position of the ovary, and try to take its
community ie inflorescence architecture...
* FRUIT -- most fruits are unique... and if you can get a fruit in
hand, cut it open...
find the seed... photograph as much as you can... include a ruler for
size...

* TWIG -- one of my Herbal medicine teacher used to say one can
actually identify herbs based on one good twig...
.
* FORM -- Shape of the tree and its growth habit often is
unique ... unless the tree is growing on a windswept rocky coast
where its shape would be distorted... but generally a tree shape is
unique...

AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT CAUGHT your eye... that's very important... not
what the common wisdom dictates...
