Dear friends,

Would someone let us know if there are more than one species known as sugarcane  ? querying in context of getting to see many varieties of sugarcanes at different vendors ... some are thick and dark coloured, while some are slim and bright.

Regards.

What to validate ??? Ha Ha Ha
This is sugarcane
I hope this is the only member of Poaceae which doesn't have a hollow inter node
rest all members have hollow inter node which a diagnostic character of this family

Dear Dinesh ji

There exist several cultivars in sugarcane (all belong to the same species) and are different in colour, size, sweetness etc.
CoC 671 is the variety which is widely cultivated in a variety of soil & climatic types, espl in S.India. While providing the highest % of yield, it has several other good qualities too. Co 86032 has higher sugar level. Co 8021 is resistent to 'red rot' disease. Co 88121 is the purple coloured variety.

I had chance to work with Dharani Sugars Pvt.Ltd., one of the largest sugar factories in southern India. And it was a 'sweet' experience!!!

CoC 671 (Co stand for Coimbatore - Sugarcane breeding institute, where the var. developed) is my favourite for some reasons!

Regards

In Jharkhand what we have the stem in dark brinjal colour, too tall
and too hard to bite in comparison to the green ones in Uttarakhand
and parts of UP.

Back in Jammu in our sugar cane fields, I have seen two distinct cultivars: taller, thicker canes pale green stems used mainly for eating raw and extracting juice common in Indian markets; and second more tufted, shorter and less thicker canes, mostly reddish in colour, rarely seen in market but processed for the yield of Gur/sakar finally refined into commercial sugar.

There are 3 species of Saccharum in Maharashtra:
Saccharum officinarum L.

Saccharum ravennae (L.) L.

Saccharum spontaneum L.
The last one is found in the wild, the other two are cultivated.

Hope that answers your query Dinesh.

Regards,

Samir
