Hello friends,

Good morning.

This Sunday it's about the Rainforests, verily called 'the Jewels of the earth', 'Lungs of our earth' and so on. In terms of biodiversity, no word or phrase is really adequate to describe them.

Sadly, the monsoons this year have been delayed and in Bangalore the unscheduled power cuts have already begun. 60% of Karnataka's power comes from hydel projects located in the prestine rainforests of the Western Ghats and the hydel reservoirs are almost empty! Grim isn't it ? Even an atomic power plant (Kaiga) is located in these same valuable forests. Thousands and thousands of sq km of these prime rainforests have been sacrificed for these projects.

Our friend Mr. J. M. Garg of 'Indiantreepix' has created a fairly large library of bird pictures on Wikipedia Commons. Following is a brief introduction to his work. Please log on to the links given below to look at his work.

Very best wishes,

Mohan Pai

He is a passionate naturalist & an amateur photographer. He has been trekking a lot since last 15 years. His aim is to create awareness about our Trees & Plants, winged friends (Birds), Butterflies, etc. in particular & nature around us in general.

With this aim in mind, he had published a book called 'A Photoguide to the birds of Kolkata & Common birds of India' with the help of his friends from all over India & outside. He also held a few Exhibitions mainly focussing on Bird Photography.

With this aim only, 'Indiantreepix' - a google group http://groups.google.co.in/group/indiantreepix?hl=en, (around 855 members on 7/6/09) was started for creating awareness about Indian Flora. He has also started to dabble a bit with oil paints for last few years.

He is currently working on 'Wikiproject Lepidoptera' & 'WikiProject Birds' & contributing to 'Tree of Life Wikiproject' of Wikipedia. He has uploaded thousands of his best images of Birds, Buttterflies, Trees & Plants etc. in Wikimedia Commons, which can be seen at (arranged alphabatically & placewise):http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:J.M.Garg.

Lots of them are used in Wikipedia & Wikispecies & can be seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Jmgarg1 & http://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Jmgarg1 respectively.
