Raksha is a youth based group actively fighting against cruelty on animals and pleading for Animal rights in Jaipur. It advocates for all animals, trying to save them from abuse, beating, ill-treatment, over-loading etc and opposes animals-birds to be kept in captivity.
On 16thJanuary team Raksha got a frantic call on Snake Helpline at 7.00A.M. in the morning for a monitor lizard/mongoose like animal straying inside a house (as per the caller) at Surajpole Gate, near Galta. Raksha Rescue Cordinator Mr. Piyush Shastri, reached the spot immediately and was amazed to see a Small Indian Civet (Hindi Name: kasturi) (Scientific Name: Viverricula indica). It had probably come down from the nearby forest area and lost its way after being followed by stray dogs. This beautiful, shy and nocturnal creature, kasturi has been recorded in jaipur after a gap of seven years. It is for the first time a civet cat has been rescued, recorded and released successfully in Jaipur. The small Indian civet prefers dry and moist forest stays in tree trunks, under rocks and is visible all year around in its habitat. It makes a sound like a cat, but a sharp “Meeow”. It eats rats, squirrels, poultry, roots, vegetables, fruits (jungle berry’s) etc.
After the rescue the department of forest was informed and the animal was later released back in the nearest wildlife area after sunset.

Alone we cannot, Together we can !
Great work Rohit, but it is not the Small Indian Civet, but the Common Palm Civet [Paradoxurus hermaphroditus].
