Looks like some common cactus - Don't know the exact id. Found on roadside 50KM away from Rudraprayag.

 

Please help with id.

it is
Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm.-Dyck. Cact. Hort. ed. 2, 64, 1850;
Almeida, Fl. Mah. 2: 336, 1998; Singh et al, Fl. Mah. St. 2: 83, 2001.
Synonyms: Cactus cochenillifera L., Sp. Pl. 468, 1753. Opuntia
cochenillifera Mill., Gard. Dict. ed. 8, 6, 1768.

here is the distinguishing character for the two genera
Stem flattened, not winged
3. Stamens exserted beyond corolla..........................Nopalea
3. Stamens not exserted beyond corolla....................Opuntia

I am a bit confused - I tried both the names suggested on internet,
and in both cases the picture tallies.
Please clarify.

Dalia ji there is no need to get confused. The plant earlier known as Opuntia cochelinifera L. in now correctly known as.

Nopalea cochenillifera(L.) Salm-Dyck

So you will find both the names on net matching: some sites following older nomenclature, some new. Several former species of Opuntia are now shifted to Nopalea.
