Hi,
I had been to Kaas in Oct 2008.
Are these karvi flowers?
I have posted 2 pics. one closeup of a flower and another long shot with leaves.
The flowers were very very light purple in colour, a slight tinge of purple colour.
The leaves looked like Karvi leaves including the texture.
These plants were found only at one corner, hardly 7 to 8 in number.
cheers,
shubhada

[ माळ कारवी (mal karvi), टोपली कारवी (topli karvi) endemic to high elevations of Western Ghats ]

Hi, Shubhada ji & Dinesh ji,
I would like to go for Thelepaepale ixiocephala syn. Strobilanthes ixiocephalus (bit karvi, patri) as per Dinesh ji's link at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/3093379330/
It also flowers once in 7 years.

Hi Dinesh,
Thanx for a quick response. i feel it is not topli karvi.

Topli karvi or Mal karvi plants do not grow very high. infact they look like a topli  i.e. a bucket put upside down (hence the local name) when not in bloom. Flowers are darker shade of purple colour. they are plenty on Kaas plateau.

whereas, plant in my pic was a shrub around 10 ft high. flowers were not dark purple in colour. They did not grow as neatly as topli karvi do.

i am attaching a pic of topli karvi. pl compare the leaves.
cheers,
shubhada
