Yazdy ji, nice photo. In Malayalam we call it "Kattuvazuthana"
meaning wild brinjal.
Regards,
Mani.

Thank You Mani, I will try to find it out by the Malayalam name .
However, once again, the flowers are white, whereas the pictures I had
submitted last year had purple flowers.Certain portals show both
purple as well as white flowers.
Regards
Yazdy.

Solanum mammosum is known as MACAWBUSH, NIPLEFRUIT--densely hairy and
prickly herb; flowers mauve; fruits ovoid-oblong, 4-7 cm long, yellow,

Solanum viarum (syn: S. khasianum Cl. var. chatterjeanum
S. Gupta): TROPICAL SODA APPLE—Small shrub with glandular hairs; prickles up
to 5 mm long, curved as well straight; infl 1-5 fld, peduncle reduced;
corolla white; berry pale yellow, 2-3 cm across.

Perhaps yazdi ji can comment in light of above comparison. Habit and fruits are very different in two.

Dear Friends ,
From the links provided by Dr. Gurcharan Singh ji, it is clear, it is
not Solanum mammosum as the fruits are totally different.
The description of Solanum Viarum prickles size shown as up to 5 mm
long is not correct. The prickles can be as long as 15 mm as seen in
the second link provided by Dr. Gurcharan Singh ji. However the yellow
fruits seen on the almost dead plant is because it has not ripened but
decayed. The third picture of Solanum viarum clearly shows the fruit
is yellow and slowly turning red.
I think it is solanum Viarum.
Regards
Yazdy.

Here is some characters of S. viarum from Flora of china:

armed with recurved prickles 2-5 × 1-5(-8) mm and sometimes with needlelike prickles 1-4 mm........Corolla white or green.....................pale yellow, globose, 2-3 cm in diam.

Even the key in Flora of China separates S. viarum and other species on the basis of pale yellow fruit.

There are numerous photographs on net with pale yellow fruits, none with red

Dr. Gurcharan Singh ji,
I am a lay person and may be wrong. I would like to know which is the
fruit that I had posted last year? I had photographed the flowers,
fruits while it was green , slowly turning yellow and then red. I do
not know how to locate them on efloraof india.com or indianreepix.com
. In which case that will have to be renamed.
The leaves are the same, the prickles are the same, the fruits size
and colour while raw are the same, the flowers were purple. The size
of the fruits were the same. The plant though was not as big as the
ones in the pictures sent today.
Regards
Yazdy.

There is an old mail by Sibdas Ghosh. Further investigation into this may probably resolve the issue.

There is another useful link in our database

Nomenclature of this plant was discussed by Prof. Babu. A perusal of these papers may help further

Kindly wait for fruits of this plant to mature. We may be able to conclude better.

Dear Friends
Thank you so much Dr. Gurcharan Singh Ji for unearthing the entire thread.
This is becoming very interesting. From the links for Solanum
Capsicoides that you had pasted, I observe that(1) there are no
pictures of raw fruits,
(2) The prickles are many very close to each other in the pictures on
the links submitted by you.(4) The leaves are larger than the leaves
in my old pictures. (5) The pattern on the raw fruit in my pictures is
different from the ones in discussion right .
In other words, I was wrong.
The red fruits posted by me, last year are not Solanum Viarum but
were what you have all along been calling Solanum Capsicoides
Am posting pictures of fruits of Solanum Viarum in this mail, both raw
as well as a couple just ripening. They are yellow. The flowers are
white.
My apologies for creating so much confusion.
Regards
Yazdy.

Dear Dr Gurcharan Singh,

Thanks a lot for your explanation. I myself have never seen Solanum
viarum in my country.
Yours Sincerely,

Pudji Widodo

Dear Yazdy ji
Thanks for your comments. In future I would suggest that we may photograph plants at different times (same plant to avoid confusion) but post it to the group when you have photographs of leaves, flowers, young fruits and mature fruits. This is specially true of Solanum in which a lot of species have been created out of broadly identified Solanum nigrum.

Yazdy ji, your fruits still don't seem ripe. Wait for them to ripe and then you may post the whole series.
Young leaves of these species are likely to be confused.
