Taken at Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Flowers photographed on 20th Dec,2007, pods on 9th April,2011.
The leaves are edible, used in Supari mixture.
The seeds are white...unlike the other two which are red.
Flowers are also white in color.

Also I have seen green (with white) seeds of this. Is mutation responsible for this production of varied colored seeds or any cross-over? I never knew this plant is poisonous.

In Tamil, it is called 'Pilliyar kannu' which transliterates into 'Eye of L.Ganesha'; used for pressing eyes in clay idols.

In spite of being highly poisonous the seeds had been used for weights (Rati), and also for making rosaries. The seeds are not dangerous as long as the hard seedcoat is intact, but especially when they are drilled to be used in rosaries they are highly dangerous and can be fatal if ingested.

Yes there are white varieties... I have seen photoged and collected
white seeds of these... as curiosity in a hot house in NY, and at a
students learning garden of an Ayruvedic college in India... local
village gardeners said its used for doing magic... they seemed to be
all afraid of the seeds....

I have seen only four colour-forms of Abrus precatorius seeds. But local nati-vaidhyas in TN say there is a green form which is said to be very rare and most efficacious among all. But I yet to come across with that.

Dear all please find the uses of Abrus precatorius in Orissa (this is a compiled information from different tribal districts of Orissa, where they use the same species for different purposes)

Uses: The seeds are valued in making necklaces for their bright coloration. The roots are used for gonorrhea and jaundice.   The oil extracted from seeds is used to promote the growth of human hair. The species is also used by the tribal against dog bites, backache, knee pain, mouth ulcers and stomachache.
