Dear Prasanna et al,

Syzugium jambos is completely different from S. malaccense.

S.jambos: small tree, stem irregular, bark reddish brown - grey
S. malaccense medium tree, stem monopodial, bark whitish pale brown

S. jambos: leaves oblong-lanceolate 15-28 x 2-5 cm
S. malaccense: leaves elliptic-oblong 16-45 x 9-20 cm

S. jambos: Inflorescence white
S. malaccense: Inflorescence pink

S. jambos: fruits globose 3-4 mm diam. green, yellowish.
S. malaccense: pear shaped, obovoid, globose, 3-8 cm diam. greenish, white, pink striped, red, dark red-blackish.

Dear All: Besides the scientific differences enumerated by Pudji ji,
there is one big difference in the FRUITS of these three
Syzygiums....

Syzygium Jambo... fruit is not pear shaped, is oblong, yellowish
pinkish with a tinge of green, and brown as it ripens... and is
hollow... with a round seed or two inside... the wall of the hollow
fruit is 5 - 8 mm thick, fragrant, smells faintly of a rose... or even
a honeysuckle flower...

AND

Syzygium samarangense and Syzygium malaccense while very
different botanically... share the characteristics that the fruits are
oblong yet pear shaped, and almost solid , 1- 1.5 cms on either side
from the center, which may or may not have a seed...(seedless
varieties are taking over in commercial cultivation, it seems) ....

Thanks,
Usha di
