Please help me id this tree growing on the premises of a Govt Office in Chennai.
It had a very interesting trunk and had some butterflies hovering over the fruit and flowers at the top of the tree.
 Thanks,
Padmini Raghavan.

The trunk has such a distinctive pattern that I hope someone will be able to throw some light on its id.
(The pics of Gmelina arborea show a smooth trunk.)

Thanks,

It  looks like  Premna species.  One has to check the characters ( leaves, flowers etc.) to arrive at the species.  What is ithe colour of the flowers. Whitish, greenish or greenish white flowers? What type of  drupe : globose, sub globose or abovoid?

Dear Drs. Kunhikannan and Mahadeshwaraswamy,
The fruits are spherical like small marbles. There were no flowers when I managed to photograph the tree.
The only pic I was able to view on the net was one of Premna serratiofolia and the fruit matched but not the leaves.
 Thanks for the clue.
Rgds,
Padmini Raghavan.
