The genus Cyathodium is represented by nine taxa in India. They are C. indicum, C. tuberosum, C. mehranum, C. aureonitens, C. tuberculatum, C. cavernarum, C. smaragdinum, C. denticulatum and C. acrotrichum. The genus is mainly characterized by thin, delicate, hyaline, spongy, dichotomously branched thallus. The female involucre is present on the ventral surface of the thallus towards the apex. The involucre is characteristic, being globose with a wide, rimmed mouth inhabiting usually one sporophyte. Rarely there may be two sporophytes in one involucre, although C. mehranum usually possesses two sporophytes per involucres. Out of the 9 species of Cyathodium found in India, C. aureonitens, C. cavernarum, C. smaragdinum is having south Indian distribution.
Cyathodium caveernarum, Cyathodium denticulatum, Cyathodium smaragdinum are with smooth involucres and C. aureonitens, C. tuberosum, C. mehranum, C. indicum, C. tuberculatum and C. acrotrichum are having hairy involucre. Cyathodium foetidissimum doses not form distinct rosettes. This plant has an aromatic smell when fresh.
