This big tree was  growing in a Govt Park in Chennai.
Last month, there were no fruit on it though I had seen plenty of fruit on the Mahogany trees in Bangalore.
Is it a Sweitenia mahagoni?
Are they not likely to bloom or fruit in Chennai?
Thanks,
Padmini Raghavan.

Could be Sweitenia macrophylla. But cannot be confirmed till flowers
and fruits are observed.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I checked the James Cook university site and read that Khaya senegalensis has a smooth grey bark.
This tree had a very distinctively patterned bark all the way up its trunk and branches.
Regards,
Padmini Raghavan.

Hi All,
I re-checked the Google sites and found a pic of a  Khaya senegalensis, planted as a street tree at Hanoi University of Technology, Vietnam, which matches the trunk of my tree.

Please confirm if the leaves also match.
Thanks for all the help,
Rgds,
Padmini Raghavan.

One should not relay on the bark structure alone. Many times it will
be confusing that too a photograph. Many times nature of the trunk/
bark changes depending on the age, ecological conditions etc. Of
course this is true for all floral and foliage. Check the flowers and
fruits( of course when it flowers and fruits).

I think Rajdeo ji is correct, It is Khaya senegalensis-African mahogany. I have seen the same in Mumbai, but smaller trees.  The very distinct bark, ashy, scaly, pink tinged and the long, compound  leaves at the end of the twigs, indicative of the same. Please check the pictures and  info in 'Trees of Delhi' , pg :236

regards,
Rashida.
