Dear Devipriya ji
Thanks for citing a combination made in 1879 and followed by Sivarajan in 1996. Perhaps it may interest you to know that KEW Plant List has been published in 2010, and it lists  H. schizopetalous as an accepted name and Dyer;s combination as mere synonym. based on WCSP. It is also considered as accepted name by TROPICOS and GRIN (updated December, 2009).

Both H. rosa-sinensis and H. schizopetalous have lot of colour forms, the latter being characterised by laciniate petals clearly seen in above plant.

According to me the above plant is a cultivar known as H. schizopetalous 'Pagoda'

Respected Gurucharanji,

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn. var. schizopetalus (Dyer) Mast. has medium and red single flowers characterized by dissected petals, long pedicels and long projecting staminal columns. Stamens 60-90, monadelphous, borne on the upper one third of the staminal column.

The plant in the photo is given as Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn. cv. El capitolio Sport in the website of the International Hibiscus Society.

Although there is a long controversy as to the systematic ranking of the former, i.e. H. schizopetalus vs. H. rosa-sinensis var. schizopetalus, Sivarajan & Pradeep (1996) have retained it as a variety under the H. rosa-sinensis species-complex.

Sivarajan & Pradeep (1996) have also reported that the variety is also used in the production of garden hybrids with Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. So I feel that the cultivar El Capitolio sport might have originated in this manner, although this needs to be verified.

In the IHS website, its parents are mentioned as cv. El Capitolio - the red cultivar of this type double flower with hanging centre, and its father as cv. Sport - its details are not given. Further, the parents of El Capitolio are also ot known. So I feel that the chance of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis var. rosa-sinensis or H. rosa-sinensis var. schizopetalus, being one of the parents or grand parents might be there.

with regrads,

devipriya

Thanks Devipriya ji and Gurcharan ji for the info and flower ID.  I think the flower in the link sent by Gurcharan ji is similar to the flower photo sent by me.

Regards,

Mani.
