Over half a million users may lose Internet in July, including thousands
in India
Washington: For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the
difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this
summer.
Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers
ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers
around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety
net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet
disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut
down.
The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security
partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're
infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected
users won't be able to connect to the Internet.
Best,
Sasi

Of course, if you are a GNU/Linux or FreeBSD user, you may not have to
worry. But the whole point is that if this is true, it could encourage
many Windoze users to migrate, and we could make this an opportunity to
promote Free Software.

True, but a few infected machines could cause serious problems for many
users.

I wouldn't be smug about any machine. Remember that hundreds of
thousands of Macs were infected recently, though I admit that I do not
know of a similar epidemic for GNU/Linux machines. But, let us remember
that, in principle, no machine is perfectly safe. Assuming that, let us
make this an opportunity to point out the serious flaws in the Windoze
system and see if we can get people to migrate. That was the whole point
of my posting the news here.
