Subject: IBET: Salt Creek and Sandhills
Sunday morning, I walked along the Salt Creek bike path in western Cook
County between Mannheim and Wolf. Not much in the way of songbird migrants-
29 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, and a phoebe, so I
counted woodland birds. The chickadees are really responsive to pishing
right now, but instead of being in flocks of 6 to 10 like in the fall, they
are mostly paired and singing. I counted 84, which is a bit below the top
count of 114 I had along the same route early last fall. So does that mean
about 30% winter mortality? That would be pretty low for chickadees I
think. It may mean I was distrated by warblers last fall, no danger of
that yesterday. Other counts included 35 Downy Woodpeckers, 8 Hairy
Woodpeckers, 17 Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and 16 White-breasted
Nuthatches. Also there were a total of ten Wood Ducks. This is the time
of year that they are up in the trees checking out potential nesting
sites. Pretty cool.
At about 1 PM, approximately 250 Sandhill Cranes went over our
house in four groups. The first group contained a Snow Goose.

Great News Spring has finally arrived in the Northwoods. I was down by the lake watching some ice fisher people fishing by their pick up out on the ice when the first penquin arrived. It flew all the way up from tha Antartic and was over by the people trying for a hand out since there was no open water anywhere, I be;ieve it was the Adelie penquin Pygoscelis adeliae. It flew up here as it needed cold weather, global warmimg is bringing us new birds.

Subject: IBET: No Sightings - Bunker Hill
I thought perhaps some IBETers might find the following statistics
interesting.
I first began surveying the Caldwell Woods/Bunker Hill Forest Preserve in
Chicago in 1993 as a restoration volunteer for the VSN and have continued to
monitor it almost weekly (if not daily) during spring and summer every year
since then. Next year will be my tenth year keeping records for this site.
As a teenager I caddied (and tried to golf as well as my dad) at the very
spot where I now see bees and butterflies and birds.
I have identified and kept records on the following throughout these past 9
years. From my records -
108 species of birds
31 species of butterflies
10 species of dragonflies
4 species of damselflies
190 species of native wildflowers
24 species of trees
And although I love them and struggle mightly with them, of the possibly 20+
species of sedges (those are the stems with edges) I can only name accurately
about 6. That's one of this year's projects.
Do come out some day. I'd love to see you there. Every year I find
something new that keeps my lists expanding.

Subject: IBET: weekend Peoria birds; request for info on additional Peoria area birding spots
First of all, after growing up in Connecticut, I just HAD to congratulate the UCONN Huskies on their perfect season, and 3rd NCAA Championship tonight! Just have to love any team with such a fantastic Bird on it (Sue, that is) and so many other fantastic players! Former Illinois birder (and now a resident of Newtown, CT) Renee Baade should have really enjoyed the outcome tonight too!
Ok, sorry bout that, but their season was just so fantastic!
Ok, back to birds:
I was visiting my in-laws in Peoria over the weekend and got to do a little birding there.
It was nice to see a number of Turkey Vultures on the drive down, a few in Grundy County and a number along Rt. 24 heading into Peoria. Quite a few Red-tailed Hawks and Kestrels seen along the drive down too. A number of the farm ponds along I-55 had ducks on them - scaup, coots and buffleheads were the only ones I could ID while driving by.
Walking through Laura Bradley Park, there were a number of local resident birds, but only one migrant - a creeper. Saw a phoebe and flicker outside the Methodist church today after Easter service.
I was able to find a group of 6 Pied-billed Grebes, a pair of Lesser Scaup and a pair of Bufflehead on the Illinois River (near Washington St. and a Steak and Shake) but wasn‚t sure how to get to any parks along the river in town.
Always seems to be a singing Carolina Wren just outside my in-laws condo complex, and it was there this weekend too, so that's always a nice bird to see and hear!
I was wondering if there are any IBET members who bird around Peoria often and could give me some advice on some top birding spots in and around the city. I‚ve been to Forest Park, and that‚s a pretty good birding spot, but just wondered if anyone had some advice for other good birding spots, especially for waterfowl in Peoria or East Peoria? I‚d love directions to get to Lake Peoria too.
(I know about Banner Marsh and places outside the city, but wanted to know of a few spots within 15-30 minute drive of downtown)
Thanks!

I thought some of you might like to see a list of past Chicago Audubon Award
recipients.
It's really amazing to look back at the list of the past recipients from
1977 to the present,
and to think of all those who have given so much over the past 25 years- to
birding, to nature education, and to protection of our local environment,
both in vocation and as volunteers.
Congratulation to this years very deserving Award recipients, and to all
those who have done so much in the past, and continue to do so!
(By the way, as of Sunday night, we have 60 people signed up to attend the
dinner! The Homestead Restaurant says they don't need a 'final, final' count
until Thursday night, so if you're still interested in attending and haven't
signed up yet, please feel free to call and let me know, at 847-390-7437,
until Wednesday. The Banquet room holds 70, so we can fit in 10 more.
The dinner is at 6:30pm - cocktails at 5:30 - Saturday, April 6th, at the
Homestead Restaurant on North Ave. in Melrose Park, just east of First Ave.)

Dear friends,
There's still several days left to sign up for the CAS annual awards dinner
at the Homestead Restaurant, Saturday April 6.
To me, this is a celebration of what all of us -- volunteers, amateurs,
experts, scientists, etc. -- have been doing to protect
the habitat of this great state we call Illinois, and in particular the
Chicagoland region. Join us for a feel good evening
with a great presentation on bluebirds by Mary Hennen, one of my favorite
people, from the Field Museum. Only $25 -- can barely get dinner out and a
movie for that price anymore. And we've got something better to offer! Great
conversation with your
kind of people!
If you need details and have lost them, let me know. I"ll get them to your
personal Email.
Thanks much for letting me interrupt your birding and wildlife watching
endeavors.

Subject: IBET: Out and about in Lake, McHenry and Boone Counties
This post is from Steve Bailey sent via Sheryl De Vore's Email.
Friday, March 29, I was out doing assessments for my job at INHS, and discovered:
Garden Prairie Slough (Boone County)
350 MALLARDS
20 NORTHERN PINTAILS
20+ GREEN-WINGED TEAL
2 REDHEADS
2 GADWALLS
4 AMERICAN WIDGEON
2 WOOD DUCKS
10 COMMON SNIPE
SWAMP SPARROWS were singing
In McHenry County along Bull Valley Road just west of Wonder Lake Road, a TURKEY VULTURE flew over. Not much at
McHenry Dam except for 1 MUTE SWAN, several NORTHERN SHOVELERS, and 10-12 TREE SWALLOWS.
At Moraine Hills State Park, I had three HOODED MERGANSERS, a pair of BUFFLEHEAD, and just down the road from the main entrance, at a large pond west of River Road, were an equal number of LESSER SCAUP and RING-NECKED DUCKS -- about 200 total, as well as 10 REDHEAADS, and 12 BUFFLEHEAD, and 2 PIED-BILLED GREBE.
Saturday March 30,
Sheryl and I did our own looney trip in between going to the Project Habitat Watch meeting for Lake County monitors.
At Loch Lomond, (Lake Co) 35 LESSER SCAUP, 5 RING-NECKED DUCK, 1female BUFFLEHEAD.
At the new Lakewood Marsh Forest Preserve addition along Route 176, (Lake Co) 1 MUTE SWAN, CANADA GOOSE on a nest, 20+ RING-NECKED DUCKS, 30+ LESSER SCAUP, as well as a pair of BUFFLEHEADS on a smaller marsh along Il 176.
At Lakewood Forest Preserve near the museum, 1 MUTE SWAN, 1 TURKEY VULTURE flew over.
At Oak Openings subdivision off Fairfield Road, (Lake Co) 80 REDHEADS (thanks to Denis Bohm who had 150 Redheads there earlier in the morning), 3 NORTHERN SHOVELER, 25-30 AMERICAN WIDGEON, 20+ GADWALL, 40-50 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 20 LESSER SCAUP, 1 FEMALE BUFFLEHEAD, 3 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 6+ TREE SWALLOWS.
At Broberg Marsh, (Lake Co) 1 MUTE SWAN.
At the Arby's in Wauconda, (Lake Co) a TURKEY VULTURE flew over.
At Bang's Lake in Wauconda (Lake Co), 3 COMMON LOONS, 9 HORNED GREBES, all but 2 in breeding plumage, 5 PIED-BILLED GREBES, 400+ AMERICAN COOTS
At Pistakee Bay and Lake, (McHenry Co) 3 COMMON LOONS, 2 HORNED GREBES, 15 RUDDY DUCKS, 20 LESSER SCAUP
Along Bay Road near US 12, (on the count line) 5 more TURKEY VULTURES flew over, and low to the ground.
At Long Lake (Lake Co), 2 COMMON LOONS, a flock of 25 SANDHILL CRANES flying over, calling, heading northwest, 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES.
At Cedar Lake, (Lake Co) only 4 BUFFLEHEAD ( 2 pair).
At Deep Lake (Lake Co), 1 COMMON LOON, 1 FLYOVER SANDHILL CRANE, 1 WOOD DUCK
On the way back to Mundelein, Sheryl spotted 2 SANDHILL CRANES feeding in corn stubble near Round Lake off Route 83, and at the new Rollins Savanna addition to Lake County Forest Preserve, along Route 83, just south of Rollins Road, a pair of SANDHILL CRANES were walking in the marsh. Also there, 2 male NORTHERN SHOVELERS.
Older news: Last Thursday, March 28, at Lake Chautauqua, had 1200 RUDDY DUCKS, 350 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS thermaled over the town of Havana. Had my first FIELD SPARROW of the season singing near Havana, as well as a flock of
40 EURASIAN TREE SPARROWS, south of Havana, and another cooperative flock of 40-50 EURASIAN TREE SPARROWS,
near the bait shop at Spring Lake Conserv. Area. Also at Spring Lake were 6-8 MUTE SWANS and 500 AMERICAN COOTS.
A flock of 85 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were just outside Havana, as well as 15 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS.

Hi Everyone,
Late this afternoon, around 3:15 and out our dining room window, I noticed 4
RED-TAIL HAWKS circling up pretty high. Pretty soon 2 more followed. I didn't
think they were the same, so I went outside to check. Sure enough, more
followed and then SANDHILL CRANES came. At one point, I had 8 Red tails
kettling right over my head. Then, biggest thrill of all, a PEREGRINE FALCON
flew over! Bob had gone for a walk and when he returned, he reported about
800 Sandies and a BALD EAGLE flyover. We stayed out until about 4:30 ( a rain
and sleet shower came through during that time) and tallied about 200 more
Sandies and thank goodness and unbelievably, another Peregrine!! When we went
in, we had totalled 24 Red-tails and a COOPERS HAWK also. I just wonder what
went through in the early afternoon!!!

Subject: IBET: at least 13 loons on Diamond Lake!
Happy Easter everybody!
Steve Bailey and I took a quick trip to Diamond Lake this afternoon, wondering if more loons may have come in with the weather change (raining today!) and we found at least 13 COMMON LOONS on Diamond Lake. THe best viewing spot was at the old Gale Street Inn parking lot (now to be a new restaurant) off Diamond Lake Road. Gale STreet Inn moved across the street if anyone is wondering.
In one spot, four loons were visible in the scope at the same time. We counted at least 13 -- there probably were more.
There also was one COMMON LOON on Loch Lomond today as well.
Also, at Diamond Lake was one HORNED GREBE in full breeding plumage and five PIED-BILLED GREBES, plus several dozen AMERICAN COOTS.
Happy looning!

Subject: IBET: Please don't . . .
Recently, I sent an email to IBET about the WI Whooping Cranes. This
was a FORWARDED message that I received asking me to report any injured
Whooping Cranes. In the message I forwarded to IBET, it said "Please
contact me, too." The 'me' does not refer to me. Ha ha - kind of
funny, actually. It certainly explains the e-mails that I have been
getting.
I am not actually involved with this project. I sent it to IBET because
I thought that IBETers would have a better chance of finding an injured
Whooping Crane than my two eyes.
PLEASE DON'T REPORT ANY INJURED OR SIGHTED WHOOPING CRANES TO ME, unless
they are seen at Illinois Beach State Park. Then, I would be
interested. Otherwise, here is the vital information from that
previous message.
"If anyone sees the cranes and observes anything out of the ordinary,
they should contact Beth Goodman of Wisconsin DNR at (608)266-3219 or
(608)235-4459 (cell phone). She will coordinate any action needed to
assist or relocate a crane that is in trouble. If you cannot reach Ms.
Goodman, contact Barry Hartup at
(608)356-9462, ext. 150. Simple fly-over observations need not be
reported. The cranes are being radio-tracked, so their whereabouts will
be known. It is just birds in trouble that need to be reported."

Subject: Re: IBET: Bunker Hill
Thanks to Ed Mooney, I checked the web site for Bunker Hill, just to see what
it says (I know the area blindfolded). It's interesting that the author
mentions that the area seemed mowed, according to aerial photos. It was
mowed. It used to be the Bunker Hill Country Club. You can still see the
contours of the greens and sand traps, and the concrete from the tee areas.
It does make for great birding, though, due to the long open areas with trees
on both sides (the fairways).
When people see my posts from Whealan Pool, that means that I'm birding the
area south/west of the river; accessible from the Devon entrance. Carol tends
(I believe) to bird from the Caldwell entrance; north/east of the river. They
are two marvelous, totally different areas, with prairie at Bunker Hill and
bottomlands at Whealan. The Bunker Hill area is also a Native American
archaelogical site, according to a long out-of-print book, Chicago Area
Archaelogy. Future archaelogists examing the Whealan side will find remnants
of the Halloween Haunted Trail. Hmm...maybe I'm birding the wrong side! Oh,
wait. It's the most reliable place I know for nesting Red-headed Woodpeckers.
Bunker Hill, on the other hand, has woodcocks & owls!

Subject: IBET: Palos Easter Sunday
Due to a glitch in my work schedule today is my only day off in a 16 day
stretch so Barb&I headed to Palos area (SW Cook County) for some needed
relaxation. Fortunately we got an early start and completed our birdng before
the rain began.
Covering all of the usual locations we tallied 23 species of waterfowl.
Highlights included COMMON LOON at Maple Lake and Tampier Lake (1 at each
site), HORNED GREBE (Saganashkee Slough and Tampier Lake), GREAT EGRET (7 at
McGinnis Slough near SW Highway..quite regal in their breeding plumes!!!),
both TEAL (McGinnis), CANVASBACK (Maple Lake). all 3 MERGANSERS (HOODED MERGS
were seen only at Tampier Slough..NW corner of Will-Cook Rd/131st St).
Passerines were not very plentiful but there was a noticeable increase
in number of TREE SWALLOWS compared to last weekend and we saw our first
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS of the spring at Bullfrog Lake.
