I have a solution to the problem that newbies often come across while using ubuntu. That is, the network icon disappears. It's not that I have managed to bring that back but you can install another network manager named wicd. Its interface is also better. mail me if you don't have the package files..

Not working..

rajat@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart
[sudo] password for rajat:

Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service network-manager restart

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the restart(8) utility, e.g. restart network-manager
network-manager start/running, process 7953

rajat@ubuntu:~$ service network-manager restart
restart: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.119" (uid=1000 pid=7998 comm="restart) interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Restart" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init"))
rajat@ubuntu:~$

After this, the network manager icon does not return to me........

Ok, I got it back. I just entered /usr/bin/ and double clicked nm-applet.
but when I typed nm-applet in terminal, it was useless. double clicking did the trick.

Hi

I have also faced this of problem in past, When I used to configure my network from the
interface file in ubuntu 10.04 . when I restart the network the network icon has been disappeared.I have no problem in my network access, but still I am not able to bring back the network icon in the panel. I have checked from  the startup , and it is still there, but no luck.

In the worst case, you can create a new user. The new user will be having everything OK.
Now you either use new user Or just copy hidden configuration files from new user to your home directory to reset the configuration

#IDEA ----------
How about create a right click script - "Reset Desktop GUI"

When you call this script, It will reset .configuration files in current account.
